so I just saw how incredibly cheap ddr2 is right now and decided to get another 2x1 gb kit. I saw that the 4-4-4-12 pc 6400 ballistix and corsair xms are $29 AR at newegg, and even the dominators are only $39 AR. I almost pulled the trigger on the dominators until I noticed that they (and the regular xms) are no longer using d9's.

What's the deal with this? Are those proMOS chips as good as d9s? I've always thought that dominators are the way to go, but now I'm actually leaning towards more crucials or maybe another brand.

the Micron D9 chip which crucial uses is at best like your avatar. There great sprinters, but they die very easily. I myself have gone though 3 pairs of tracers.

They love voltage like crack, and like crack it destorys them.

Keep the voltage Near 1.95, dont exceed it, and put an active fan on it. Thats the way i found out for them to actually live longer then 3 months on heavy load.

But crucials are the best overclocking ram i have ever had. I have 3 pairs. Also bryan they dont have that annoying memory problem you had. They have no problems booting at low voltage.

I read the other day that some of those sticks that are rated for 2.2v won't work at 1.85 v or less after a while but are still fine at 2.2v. Weird...

@aigo: did you mean that the corsairs are the best overclockers?

Buy 2 *extra* sticks of D-9 .. that way when you RMA a pair at a time you won't have to wait

smart [rich] Jaguar owners do just that - one is always in the shop and one is always available to drive

Unlike Jag, it's cheap enough for us.

in order to get the 4-4-4-12 timing, you need to run them at 2.2v.... if you relax the timing, then you can run them at lower voltages.

I don't know why I asked you to look at this, apoppin. You're worse than me in video...

well, it looks like the consensus is corsair even without d9's right now. let's try a poll...

Worse than YOU in Video ?!? .. i think NOT .. i gave excellent advice .. eventually your O/C'd D-9s - the best O/C'ers - will die .. sooner than later .. and for a few extra bucks you can have a pair in "reserve"

it's insurance .. and i have a few suggestions for your pole

I'm still mad at you for stealing my cheetah. I think that longevity is more important to me now...I'm running my ballistix right now at ddr2 1062 and 2.175v. I have 2x120 mm intake fans that blow air almost directly on the ram right now, that will only get better when I install the quad this weekend and reroute all the wires/cables etc that are cluttering up the case.

that's why i don't get any AMD t-shirts?
-i'd pick a Jackal if they had one

Well, mine is really a leopard - if you look closely and actually count the spots .. and mine is bigger and less cross-eyed.

Good deal! .. and you probably won't even need an extra pair!

I'm getting the extra ram for the file server since it's so cheap right now and you never know when your 2.2v pc 8500 will take a crap on you...

prepare for RMAs if youre getting Crucials. i wouldn't be surprised if one or both of your sticks don't pass memtest86+ v2.01 for 24 hours..

I think I'll follow aigo's advice and see what kind of performance I can get out of 1.95v on my 2x1gb pc8500 ballistix. I'm not so memory OC crazy that I'm cool with the rma hassle dance indefinitely, so maybe I'll just get dominators...

ok I noticed you said EXTRA 2x1GB... does that mean you already have a 2x1GB pack? In which case I would buy something identical to your current one, the voltage would have to be the same on both, and you will need to run them at the same timings. So its gonna be as fast as the slower pair.

I wouldn't buy ram that dies really fast, the performance boost from the extra timing is negligible and the pain of having troublesome ram is just not worth it IMAO.

Some mobo's have issues with 4 sticks of ram. But these costs it is probably worth it. If you want a serious OC you should be using 4 identical sticks... or better yet... 2 sticks only... Get 2x2GB of some high rated ram (like DDR1000 or 1066) and sell your current 2x1GB pack on ebay.

sorry, I wasn't clear before. I'm planning to get a 2x1gb pair for my ip35-e rig and keep the ballistix in my ip35 pro. I'm not planning to mix the ram since I'll be using xp in both rigs and I have absolutely no desire to upgrade to vista.

it makes sense - except what you said about Vista
.. and you do have "extra" RAM if one or two stick fail in either rig
-i'd sure like an extra rig so i don't have to keep swapping HW back-and-forth

I would still go with 4GB though, even for XP... the speedup you get from faster timing is so low, and the speedup you get from extra ram is so high...

I would either go with a rock solid el cheapo 2x2GB DDR2 800 kit. Or a higher rated one for OC. Not a pc6400 for OC...

Early "high end" DDR2-800 modules had a TON of problems. I am guessing that is the reason for the extreme mail in rebate. They failed often, they had incompatibilities, etc. If something is really all that, it usually isn't found in the bargin bin.

Utter and total BS. A little of you can go a long ways sometimes Lou......

I have 8 sticks of Baliistix @ 2.1v @ 900 MHz @ 4-4-4 for nearly a year now, not a single error....

As for the OP, take a look at the SuperTalents for $29 AR Timings are 4-4-3-8, most likely D9 but the voltage is high for those timings @ 2.2v.

I personally had a stick of pc8500 ballistix fail after 4 months. The rma went very smoothly, but it did fail. My current (replacement) sticks are running fine.

never went over 2.2v, I was too scared to do it b/c of the horror stories I'd heard of ram getting killed w/ too much vdimm. I'm looking to add a little cooling and also clean up all the loose wires and psu cables to improve airflow when I install the X3350 this weekend, too.

ip 35 pro. It is possible that the mobo was overvolting the ram, though I don't think so. I think that 2.2v is just too much vcore to run 24/7/365 DC.

I'd get the Crucial, just don't go high with the vdimm, & it should be okay.
