I am looking for a replacement for my wife's failed Laptop. She uses my eee pc 900a and likes it. I was looking around at the current selection of netbooks and I noticed that nearly all of them have real hard drives as opposed to SSDs. For as much as my netbook gets tossed around I prefer the SSD in it even if it is only 16gb.

Req
5+ hours of battery life
Full sized keyboard
2GB Ram
Intel Atom
SSD

You are better off just getting a model with 1GB and upgrading it yourself, there are usually more deals on 1GB models and the deals are often more than enough to offset the cost of a 2GB stick.

SSDs in Netbooks ala the Dell Mini 9 have pretty much died off as a concept. If you want an SSD in one, you have to go all out an get a 2.5 inch SSD drive.

That is what I did in my netbook, and it is a really enjoyable experience.

Sounds good, wow that sucks that they don't have SSDs anymore. It really makes sense given the form factor, speed boost / shock resistant.

I figured I would have to do the RAM myself, not to worried it's cheap.

The SSDs were a great concept, but just dreadful performance-wise. Add to that the form factor (PATA half-mini PCIe for the Mini 9), which made decently-performing aftermarket replacements far more expensive than good 2.5" SSDs, and I'd say good riddance.

Just to give you an example, a higher-performance replacement 16GB SSD for the Mini 9 costs about $60-80-- and the form factor and interface makes it practically unusable in any other system. I would get one for my Mini 9, but spending $80 for a dead-end upgrade to a $200 system is something I have yet to come to terms with.
