You can get winrar for a free trial if you just need it to open a few files for a limited amount of time. Another option is 7zip.

Those files appear to be in .zip so Windows should be able to uncompress them without any third party tools.

Also, WinRAR is free, you just get a nag screen if you directly run it (I use7-zip, typically). But, as said, Windows XP and newer should open and extract that file, with no added software.

Try 7Zip. It's libre software, and it doesn't nag you to buy anything. Using rar format is a form of antisocial behavior.

It's not exactly free, it's shareware. I know it's the same thing for 99% of people, but it really is not free. And yes, I am guilty of using it for years too, but I switched to 7-zip about year ago

Why do you even see the interface? All common activities are in the right click context menu. If you don't like the icons, change them. It's you're right to do so, and isn't difficult.

Aside from the fact I don't understand klingon, I don't see what's wrong with 7-Zip. It's completely free, and does exactly what it's supposed to. Perfect alternative when you don't want to spend money.

well to be fair it is a good alternative especially for being free. Just saying, IMHO WinRAR is better and has been the standard in compression tools for years

The compression dialog for 7-zip is a single window, with no tabs. WinRAR is many-tabbed, and forgets all your settings in between uses (7-zip forgets the last part size, though).

7-Zip is a great piece of software. If you need a free compression/decompression utility the its a great choice.

I use Winrar purely because I have a license for it which I've had since god knows when and I get free Winzip licenses from work. But on friends PCs I always install 7-zip. It has the most needed tools and encryption features that most people require.

okay will try 7- zip first. then try winrar. I am running so many asic miner sticks to mine BTC. I need a 3rd pc. I can get the 2 pcs I have running to push about 83-88 sticks each after that I get problems. I want to run about 180- 200 sticks.

about 70+ 70+ 40.

or 75 +75+50. my other pc's had winrar installed and I paid . so I thought there has to be a cheaper way

7 zip works great, I used it all the time when I ran windows. I usually install it by default when I setup a windows machine.

Winrar/winzip are annoying because of the nags. Who actually pays for a common utility that should be part of the OS? And that's where Linux is great... comes with tar and other utilities built in for this kind of stuff.

Yeah I gave them 30 or 60 bucks already. I got the file to work So I now have 3 pc's that can run my asic sticks. I am running one with 74 sticks one with 50 sticks and one with 5 sticks. I have more sticks coming in.

I have found that 70-80 is the practical limit for 1 pc. although I did get 102 sticks to run on one machine. my machines will run this way for a while I get a batch of 20 sticks this week. bringing me to 149.

They're usb ASICs being used for cryptocurrency "mining." It's essentially distributed computing to make funny money used on a secondary market that's more anonymous. It'd be pretty cool if that distributed computing power was actually being put to good use like SETI or Folding@Home, but it's apparently just calculations for the sake of calculations.

Most of the people involved in it are either trying to make a quick buck or "hide in the mountains stockpiling MREs for the coming collapse of society" types. There's a thread about it in VC&G since before these low power ASIC miners came onto the market people were using video cards to do the calculations.

Your post is fascinating. Are you alluding to Bitcoins or something else?

OP there is no equivalent to WinRar. It is the standard that others strive to attain. Either you deal with the nag screen or pony up the cash.
