This Jet Fighter is still under testing phase.

It looks like an F-22 Raptor and also an YF-23 Black Widow II, but it has a Vertical take off.

A single engine in the middle that rotates up and down and what looks like a fan opening next to the cockpit.

Anyone know the name of it?

You're thinking of the Joint Strike Fighter concept. Currently, I believe there are two designs in consideration. The first one, the Lockheed X-35 is the one that looks very similar to the F-22. The boeing X-32 is the concept with the extremely large single intake at the bottom and most closely resembles the YF-23 design.

Lockheed won the contract several years ago.

Yah isn't that the F-35? It's in Battlefield 2. Thrust vectoring nozzle, with vertical take off and all that jazz.

The 'X' plane phase is over:

McDonnell/Douglas submittal rejected, proposal discarded in 1996.

X-32 by Boeing built for flight concept evaluation.

X-35 By Lockheed built for flight concept evaluation.

Lockheed awarded initial production contracy for F-35 in 2001.

The Boeing demonstrater did not meet all of it's required milestones.

F-35 and it's variants are currently in manufacturing pipeline in Texas.
First production model of the F-35 is scheduled for first flight in 2006.

Bingo. It doesn't have vertical take-off, however, only short take off and vertical landing. STOVL, or something...

I thought the Marine version was capable of VTOL, the majority of the video I've seen of it shows one version doing a true VTOL. I thought the turbine turned down toward the ground and the extra "fan" behind the cockpit enabled that.....

Nevermind, from what quick info Google gave, its STOVL..hmmm thought it could do the Harrier bit...

Lockheed's making a mint. First the F-22 and then the F-35. They'll be making @ssloads of money for a while to come. Although there's a lot of debate on whether or not the YF-23 was a superior aircraft.

Oh ?

From what I can tell, they gave up the idea of VTOL in favor of ASTOVL (Advanced Short Take Off Vertical Landing) in doing so they were able to increase the wing size and thus the fuel capacity. So it can take off in a short area, and land vertically, all the while having a slighty increased distance.

From above links:
The Lockheed Martin X-35 was chosen over the competing Boeing X-32 primarily because of Lockheed's lift-fan STOVL design, which proved superior to the Boeing vectored-thrust approach.

also:
The Air Force conventional take-off version will be called the F-35A; the Marine Corps STOVL model the F-35B; and the naval carrier variant F-35C. All three types are to make inaugural flights in a single four-month period less than five years from project go-ahead.

I guess it depends on load, and the model... If it can land after a controlled hover it must be able to take off if it doesn't have a pile of weaponry strapped to it. I can't see the linked video as I'm at work, but I'm going to stick my neck out and guess that it's a demo flight rather than a fully loaded model? someone want to describe it to me?

I was under the impression it was strictly STOVL across the board but I have my doubts now.

IIRC, the YF-22 was more manoverable, and the YF-23 was stealthier.
My vote would have been to the YF-23. It looks cooler

IIRC it was actually one of the reasons the boeing model lost out to the LM version. The boeing version did look like it had eaten all the pies...
