Wife and I looking to pick up a new mattress. Not looking to break the bank though. Both of us don't have the best backs in the world. We're not fat, but we're not skinny either
Was initially thinking about something like a Purple or a Casper or T&N. Wife suggested looking at Sleep Number too, but those are pretty damned pricey unless you go with the cheapest ($900)

I got a king memory foam (technically not memory foam as those get hot) and its something I do not regret. I too do not have a good or bad back, but, this bed has improved sleep quite a bit for my GF that did injure her back.

If you decide to go with a Gel bed, you can find some nice ones under 2K for a king size. Tons of sales right now too.

Do note that sexy time will be different on a memory foam bed. Its for sure worse than a regular spring mattress. I dont remember your age, but, it may be a consideration.

Also, got slightly firmer than what you think you want. People often make the mistake of going too soft with memory foam.

Went through this a few months ago. After watching video after video on mattresses I finally just went with a Tuft and Needle. Several videos mentioned it at as the best all around mattress that doesn't break the bank, one even said if you are sick of watching videos just get the Tuft and Needle. My back isn't great either and I haven't woke up sore since buying it. I'm only 160lbs so a foam mattress is fine for me but if you are heavy you may want springs or a hybrid(springs and foam).

I've heard in general that mattresses are just insanely (stupidly) overpriced. Best recommendation I was told was to just get a decent Seally from Costco and you can't go wrong.

I'm not sure though, haven't bought one in ages. Maybe the $2.5k ones with gadgets and gismos really is the way to go /shrug.

I picked up a queen sized Novaform 14" Serafina Pearl for $800 from Costco in March. Through the winter and summer months it's been very comfortable. We previously test drove a comparable one from Bob's Furniture which wasn't good at all and ended up returning. What's even better it went on sale a month later and saved another $100. As mentioned before the bounce during sexy time isn't as prominent, but the pros out weigh the cons. We both prefer a medium plush bed as we're both side-sleepers

I got a Zinus memory foam mattress from Amazon one year ago tomorrow. I wasn't sure what to expect ordering a mattress online but it inflated fine, although one or two of the corners seems a little underinflated (doesn't bother me).

At first I was sleeping warm with it, waking up almost every morning sweaty, but I eventually found it was due to my mattress protector which had this kind of "vinyl" type coating on one side of it that I deduced was hurting the breathability of the mattress. Sure enough since I ditched that protector for a simple, non-waterproof, protector I haven't woken up sweaty.

I would have a sore back whenever I slept on my old mattress (an old Sealy spring one) but haven't had that problem with the new one. I like it quite a bit and for the money I think it's quite an excellent value.

I see the queen mattress I got is $300 now; I got it on sale for $180. Slick Deals ftw!

We actually bought this same mattress for both of our kids (full size). They like them enough and the price was certainly right. For the money I don't think you can get a better one.

I bought a Purple mattress last summer and have been very happy with it. I bought the original model not the newer, more expensive model(s) that have coil support. Tuft and Needle would have been my next choice if the Purple didn't work out.

Dumb question, but the way our bed frame is, we'd need to put any of these new types of mattresses on top of our existing box frame. That shouldn't matter, right?

Along the same lines ... does anyone have a line on some decent inexpensive sheet sets? (<$50). I figured Cyber Monday would turn something up, but I'm not finding much. I like crisp cotton or a cotton/poly blend.

As long as it is structurally sound.

Sounds like a lot of strong support for virtually ANY of the "go to" names - Purple, T&N, etc etc. Might be if I go with any of those, I can't go too wrong.

Or... maybe if you go to one of the 50 or so local mattress stores you'll also find something you like. Seems to me the only thing the online mattresses have in common is that they can all be compressed to the size of a trash can so that they can be shipped cheaply. And ordered by geeks from their computers.

I have back problems, and two years ago when we replaced our bed, I bought an ultra-firm mattress from Original Mattress Factory in one of their local show rooms, and then I bought a 2" medium-firm latex topper and a soft 1" foam topper from Amazon.

The foam and what not is what always goes first in a mattress, and since the orthopedic ultra-firm mattress has next to no padding in it, we can just change out the toppers when needed. The mattress is double-sided with the internal springs, so we flip it once a year which should help it last longer as well.

The really nice thing about doing something like this is you can really customize your mattress to your needs. The latex toppers come in soft, medium, and firm. They also come in different thicknesses. It's the same thing with the foam.

We did the opposite of most of you, spent a boatload and we are perfectly happy. I'm not sure of the model, but its a beautyrest hybrid with a power base. we sleep with our head and feet elevated a bit. My wife has mild scoliosis and has no more back pain, she also reports that her acid reflux is much better. I worked on oil rigs for years and have trashed my body. I did not even realize how bad i was sleeping, how much I was sore when i woke up until we spent a month sleeping on this thing with feet and head elevated. all delivered and installed and we are happy with it. so maybe invest in a power base and try one of these cheap mattresses, report back.

I recently got some new pillows that are great. I tried out 3 different "higher end" pillows from Amazon.

I tried the MyPillow ones, the Snuggle-Pedic, and the COOP pillow.

I liked the COOP one by far and ended up returning the others. Snuggle-Pedic was too hard to the point that it would feel like I was getting a headache sometimes, and the MyPillow ones were too soft. The COOP one was the perfect blend and my neck pain has gone away.

I hadn't bought new pillows in like 5+ years though so my current pillows were complete garbage.

Good point, pillows are important. My wife has the Columbia one and i have a Sleep's cool pillow we got thrown in with the Mattress/base

are the amazon ones you tried all foam based?

I also didn't go budget - got a Tempur-Pedic about a year and a half ago. It looks like they've redone their lineup and don't sell the model anymore but it was closest in price to the base model Tempur-Adapt.

I didn't want to spend a crapton of money on the frame, so I just bought a boring-but-solid wooden platform on Amazon instead of going with the $800+ fancy crap the furniture store wanted to sell me.

The frame got to me first, and TBH it made my old crappy mattress like 100% better. I disassembled the old frame (one of the fabric-covered kind that was designed to look like a boxspring) to get it in the trash can, and the construction was honestly really flimsy, so I guess if you have some POS budget bed platform made out of 1x2s and staples, where the staples are loose and the wood is cracked, and it creaks and groans when your cat jumps onto the bed, maybe replace that before you go all in on a new mattress.

The new mattress was still way better than the old one, but in terms of bang for the buck, the platform was a way better value.

There are tons of online-order memory mattress companies disrupting the store mattress price corruption.

Try those. I got one and it's good for my toddler.

The best mattress we love is unfortunately store bought and it's the most comfortable bed we ever slept in. Wife and I always make random comment how much we love it. I think it's Simmons' beautyrest or some crap. Paid $3K.

Yeah they are all foam based but just with different densities and sizes of the pieces inside.
