I was going to pick up a 8800gt tonight (mostly for folding, but also games) but ive read a lot about defective g84/86/92/94 parts. Should i be jumping on the AMD boat or is this nothing to worry about?
Nah don't worry, most of the bad 8800GT's were early fab with older bios/s. Get any MSI-eVGA, Zotac, BFG model and you'll be G2G. PNY though not known as having top support put out good cards because they don't use flakey tricked up bios/s they use known good bios/s and their cards tend to be very stable. Moreover, most of the bad chips were notebook related 8600 class. But, you can get an HD4850 for the price of some of the 8800GT's. If you really want an 8800GT here's a great deal on the PNY 8800GT though here:
well thanks for the push, my friend heard i was looking for a card and recently upgraded to a gtx260 so he is now selling me his evga 8800gts 512 for $85.
