Ok, so I got a new Gillette Mach III turbo last night. I tried it this morning. Cool! Its the best shave I've had in over 2 years. But, I can still feel the stubble. Question: Is it best to shave with the grain or against? I go with - down strokes, from ear to chin. If I go against the grain, the shave is very smooth, no hint of stubble at all. But, for some reason, I've always thought that that was a bad thing to do. Any truth to that?

Thanks.

I know with electrics they say it takes about a month for the face to adjust to the shaver. May not be too different with handheld shavers...

Wimps I go up first and pretty much only up. Gets it all in one swoop. I find downstrokes do very little and actually just trim the stuble down to a shorter level where it's even more sturdy and more painful when you do your upstroke. I never really get any irritation either. Using gel instead of just plain cream helps too. MUCH more smooth.

up againist for sure.... but don't forget to really rub that shaving gel in before you start... and don't skimp out on the aftershave afterwards... if you not used to it.. it will give you a rash... but your skin toughens up after while. you gotta build up to it.

I go down, then up. Going up isn't a problem except for right underneath my chin, and sometimes on my neck around my trachea. OUCH!

Trick of the week: Shave in the shower, get your beard very wet & you get a closer shave. Sort of like toe & fingernails, the wetter your beard is, the closer the shave. You're supposed to shave with the grain, but I go with the grain & then against. Took forever for my beard to fill in, but now if I go for 2 or so days, I can actually draw blood with my beard against softer skin, requires a close shave to get near my wife & kids...

I also just use bar soap lather in the shower, took a year or so to toughen up my face, but now I don't have to buy shaving cream, & I can get away with the cheaper (not the cheapest) razors when I shave in the shower.

Just realized how stupid all of this sounds

Shaving tip?
Stay away from Remington's rotary shavers (their dual and triple screens were ok though). Tears my face up and I've had it since Christmas. I went back to shaving with my trusty ole Gillette Sensor (not the XL) and it's a great shave. Oh and I go down, then up, it's what the wife likes!

I have a Mach III - I lather up with shaving cream.....shave down everywhere....then rinse the shaving cream, apply fresh stuff again, and shave against the grain. By this time it is plenty softened up and you can get a great shave. Once that's done, and if you care, run your fingers over your face and chin/neck in all directions to see if any hair grows in other directions that you may have missed, and shave against that hair...

This method takes a little longer, but you may be able to hold off shaving for one extra day by spending the extra 3-5 minutes now....

_______________

Another thing I've learned is to shave before you shower using the method above. Rarely will you get cut, but if you do, just rinse your face while you're showering every 20-40 seconds. Wash your face last. When you get out of the shower you won't be bleeding at all, and you'll be smooth, smooth, smooth.

_______________

One last thing: Mach III's suck ass for trying to trim straight lines, such as sideburns, because it is too loose. I actually have a Gillette Sensor only to trim my sideburns, and then shave everything else with the Mach III.

Try out those tips, you won't be disappointed.

grow a beard

If you grow a beard, be kind and use conditioner. Ouch! when it's kissin' time.

Sarah <== loves the way a beard looks, not the way it feels

Unless you have nothing but peach fuzz on your face, I'd definitely recommend NOT doing this...

When I used to use a blade I would go across and then up. Of course I also used to dry shave so this may not work for you.

I also upgraded to a Mach III a couple of months ago. I used to go against the grain first but articles for men kept saying that going against the grain will make the hair grow even faster. So now I go down a few times, then up a couple of times.

I really doubt shaving against the grain is going to make your hair grow faster.... How can shaving dead cells with no connection to the inside of your body somehow affect a biological process that is happening....

Probably like the myth that shaving makes hair grows thicker....I bet this started with teenagers who noticed their normal peachfuzz was starting to darken....they shaved and soon noticed that whiskers were coming in, and assumed this was caused by shaving....when in fact it is just puberty, a natural, and again, a biological process, happening.

I call BS on that.

I like to shave down with the grain of the hair first, just to get most of the hair. Then I go against the grain to get all that's left.
