Hey guys,

I'm building a new windows 7 system and I'm planning to roll the whole thing onto an SSD for the boot device. I'm thinking maybe 128GB, but I could probably do with 80GB...Looking at the review the Intel's are great and so are the Vertex indilinx drives.

I'm looking for some opinions here.

1) what will be the sweet spot for sizes in the next month with Thxgiving and XMas around the corner?

2) What should I look for as a buy price?

3) Will the Indilinx and intel both include support for TRIM?

4) Should I wait longer for something someing in Q1?

Thanks for your help!

for size you want the smallest (cheapest) that is enough for you... how much space does your OS drive currently take? actually I suggest you use windows 7 for a month or two on a spindle drive with tons of space, then check to see exactly how much space it takes up... so you know what you personally need.

Intel x-25M G2 is a good bet for around $200. Fastest drive on the market today and supports TRIM.

Well, space wise, I'm not using my system efficiently. I have a 1TB partition for my boot and a 500GB Temp partition for other stuff (I'm running a 4 drive raid 0 stripe with 500GB drives). I'm at about 80% capacity, mainly because I keep all my static media files on the boot drive...for convenience...it's sloppy really.

When I go to Windows 7 (I have the release disk now) I'll like just load the OS on the flash drive and mount the RAID partition onto the programs folder (that's what I'm thinking anyway) and the documents folder on another partition.

I really not sure how best to setup the OS with multiple drives. In Linux it's pretty straight forward, but with the windows throws files everywhere, I'm just not sure.

Anyway...that's why I'm thinking 128GB. It would be enough for the OS and likely would give me some room to load a game or two.

Indeed. I'd be all over them at around $200.

Newegg had the Retail 80Gb G2 for $239 yesterday I think. BUT it sold out and jacked back up to $299.

I can't believe that Intel can't keep up with demand. They make millions and millions of chips (cpu/flash/chipset, etc) a month, you'd think they could crank these drives out easily.

Not necessarily, NAND flash was supposed to go up in price.

It is very rarely that PC components go up in price over a multi-month period. Not that it hasn't happened, especially with DRAM, but trends tend to be down over time. Plus, in two months, SATA 3 will be shipping and having a SATA 2 SSD that is being bottlenecked in sequential reads by SATA 2 won't be such an easy thing to sell at a premium. I'm also pretty sure that every NAND maker and SSD maker wants to drive adoption of SSD's as fast as possible. The faster they can take out WD and Seagate the better. Think about it, three years ago, nobody would be recommending Intel or OCZ drives over WD/Seagate. Intel, Samsung, OCZ and etc have a golden opportunity to add market share and market cap here, so long as SSD adoption goes up. If SSD prices go up, SSD adoption stagnates and they give more time to the old-world disk guys.
