Looking to get new monitor

My PF790 is quitting on me. If possible I would like to get another large screen monitor.
I have never looked at the LCDs. I notice that the 19" Viewsonic LCDs offered at NewEgg are not bad in price these days ($300 range).

I play EverQuest and occasionally action, such as HL series, etc.

I have heard in passing about response time, etc. What do you recommend?

What should I know?

I am guessing about 4 weeks or so before I can afford something. Perhaps I will need to look for a used LCD.

How much are you willing to spend? I didn't know if you meant that you are wanting to spend in the $300 range, or there are some nice LCDs in that range on newegg's site.

Well, I'm sorry for your loss. I just gave my PF790 up for a while. I ran it dual with a 2001FP, but desk space demanded I move on...
What price range are you looking at?

I am still using my VS PF790... So far the thing has been running 24/7 for about, oh gosh, 5-6 years? I purchased the Monitor when it was $599 or so. The monitor shows no signs of weakness... It does not suffer any brightness issues either.

Anyway, sorry about your loss, you had a great monitor Let it R.I.P.

Well since I am an unemployed (now) student getting about $400/month with no rent or utilities to pay through January, I was just looking.

The monitor still works more often than not if I do not play with the power button. It can black out on its own. It may take 15 minutes of pushing it in and out or an hour to get it to work.
After a while if it doesn't come on I leave it off a while and try later. It seems to come on after several tries then.

I spoke to VS tech support and the guy said, Honestly it would not be cost effective to get it repaired...probably costing $250.

A friend has loaned me a tiny 13" old 1996 mfg date Princeton Graphic Systems EO14 monitor.

It comes in handy as a last resort.

If you want a LCD I recommend waiting for a Dell deal (if at all possible). I just got a 2005FPW that lists for $699 for $359 + tax. I upgraded from a DiamondTron 19" CRT and am very impressed with the LCD.

I have seen people talk about that LCD. Where are you people buying it for 300 dollar range? Pricegrabber has them all in the $500 range.

Do you mean like Ebay? I see auctions like this guy:

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-DELL-2005FPW-NE...96QQcategoryZ86706QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I would want to buy from a place where I can have a warranty. Buying from someone on Ebay doesn't inspire trust to me.

BTW I currently use an ATI 9600xt and XP. I see I need this: "To optimize this monitor's performance, your system must be able to support WSXGA+ resolution (1680 x 1050)".

Does this qualify?

The 9600XT will run that monitor's resolution.
keep an eye on the 'hot deals' forum here. I was biting my nails for a couple of months, waiting for the 2405 to come up for sale. (finally did last month)
Dell does 33% deals (and others) every 3 months or so, it seems. I've seen the 2001FP for $385 here at AT, though that's probably too much for your vid card to handle @ native resolution.

Oh, and are you saying that it's mostly your power switch that's causing the problem with the monitor? If it's that mechanical, I wonder if you could find a workaround for it. (as a last resort, you know?) I kept mine on 24/7, as it would just go into standby when comp was off. Rarely actually pressed the button. (usually at night, if I was gaming on other monitor, and wanted to reduce glare from extended desktop)

It all started many months ago when it turned off in standby. I moved the mouse, hit the keys, and it would not come back on.

The power light would be on, but the screen would be off.

When you push the button in, it will do the first small click, then a second later it would make a louder click without the static Wooosh it should do.

It was fine for months where I would just leave it on. Then one day for some reason (reboot or pushing button or what ever) I caused it to turn off.

Ever since then it will now (4 times so far) spontaneously black out. It has happened in the middle of working on something or playing a game.

It takes several to too many (15 minutes I give up and turn it off a few hours) times of constant pushing in and out to get it to come on. I have turned it off, taken a nap, and come back to push it 4 times and get it to come on after that.

That Ebay auction makes me feel suspicious. This guy gets a shipment of monitors for $350 and will not say from where. He doesn't know for sure if they have a warranty. How do you know you aren't buying stolen property....

btw is that 2005FPW a good monitor for fast action games?

I looked on the Dell website and could not find a response time listed.

The 2005FPW is fine for FPS games. The respones time is 12ms, although it seems 16ms is the panel's spec. Either way I noticed no problem at all, unless you play at 100fps or whatever (i.e. turn up the graphics!!). But yeah, unless you got in on the $359 deal last month, the 2005FPW is out of your price range. Take one look at one in person and you will be amazed. I figured I may as well go all out and have a high-quality, big monitor that is easy on the eyes and will last through several computer upgrades. Then down the road I shall purchase another for cheap and run dual!!

I was one of the lucky ones to get the 2005fpw for 389+shipping, and I think it's awesome for games if you have the graphics card that can handle it.

Early this morning while working on homework, just as I did a save, it went black.
It seems it will only stay on maybe a day or two now.

If anyone is in California that has the technical skills to fix monitors, in the central valley area, and wishes to pick it up for oh say...$10, PM me I guess.

Sucks to have to rely on this tiny loaned monitor.

How are these people on Ebay selling supposedly new dells for such low money starting out?

What is the difference between the 1 and 2 revisions I have seen?
