Hi

I am using Reh Hat Linux 7.1, I have replaced my monitor (coz the previous one got busted).

My PC still boots on linux, but upon entering the GUI, (after startx) nothin is displayed

whats wrong? is this because, my previous monitor was defined in linux OS? or is it on the display resolution settings?

what should i do ? i hope i dont have to reinstall the linux OS again

thanks

Login to a command prompt, su to root, copy the XF86Config file for backup. Then reconfigure X to work with the new monitor.

It could be a refresh rate problem. You new monitor might not support the refresh rate you had you old one set to.

Do you have other boot options?

If you do, you might want to use that, then edit your /etc/init.conf (or whatever the script for init is). It'll be towards the bottom.

If you don't have another boot option, try booting off of the disk, and quit the install program. Mount /dev/hda1 (I'm assuming that you have RH as the primary install, and that your HD is the master on the IDE bus), and then access /etc from there.

once it boots up and tries to go into X, just hit ctrl-alt-f1 (f1 -f6) to switch to a virtual console. That will get you to were you can log in a redo the X configuration.

Also you can hit ctrl-atl-plus (+ or - buttons actually) to switch resolutions. You may be able to get to a usuable one, but it'll probably be easier to switch to the console to reconfigure X.

You can also pass boot parameters from your lilo prompt (if you use lilo).
Say your linux installation is called linux, you can simply type linux 3 to get it to boot to runlevel 3, which won't load the GUI.
