Guys,

I have a LaCie 500GB I use via my Firewire connecttion. I have the drive split into 2 partitions, with lots of data on both!

I turned on the PC yesterday and the partitions are not recognised anymore. I talked to LaCie and they suggested that I try and recover the MBR, as the drive is recognised in WinXP, but not the partitions.

I found a few tools, but they all work from DOS. Of course I can't see my Firewire drive from DOS, and so I am stuffed!

Does anyone know of a Partition / MBR recovery program that works from Windows, or does anyone have any other ideas? I am really sc..... if I can't get my data back. I have some backups, but not everything (500GB).

TIA

Ended up buying (actually paying monies for) Acronis RecoveryExpert. That sorted it out. It found the partition information, and I can access the data again!

thats interesting... when I think of external drives, I always think of backing up your machine hard drive to them, not accessing information frequently off of them...

I have set up a 24/7 WinXP machine with all my MP3s and films. I access the PC with my Pinnacle ShowCenter.

The LaCie drive is for ease, and because the Shuttle XPC could not fit 3 drives into it (1 for OS and programs, and 2x250GB for data). I already have over 350GB MP3s, and some 100GB of films.

Also, the firewire drive is really fast. With FW800 it is actually as almost as fast as my Raid0 HDs in my other PC.

Go ahead, I have 2450 CDs in crates from my DJing days, and at 320 KBPS, a 500GB HD is actually on the small side

The LaCie is coming around. Supposedly this can happen if the drives inside the housing overheats. There is a firmware upgrade, but I can't figure it out yet.

The drive is really fast, using the Firewire as well as the USB2. I'd like to hear pros and cons regarding which interface to use.
