Naaman acknowledged the species were likely endangered from oxygen exposure during the discovery process but said he was confident in the scientific importance of the find. He said he believes further exploration will reveal additional new life forms.

Seems odd that the only obvious change would be not having eyes.

evolution is only necessary to adapt to ones surroundings. cosmetic appeal is irrelevant as far as evolution goes if it's not warranted. they are perfectly adapted to their sealed environment and have no need to develop legs or arms.

5 million years is a long weekend as far as evolution goes. And remember, these creatures were likely already adapted to the majority of their environment before whatever happened to seal it.

Actually 5 million years is along time. Evolution can happen very quickly, and in this case it did, despite what the layman may think. Just because a creature looks like a regular crayfish does not mean that it isn't totally extraordinary. Consider that these creatures had to adapt to living in a completely different environment from ours. That cave may as well have been the ocean under Io's ice, or a cavern 2 miles below the surface of Mars. It's an incredible feat to evolve quickly enough to survive without a sunlight supported ecosystem.

I think the most interesting thing there is that their ecosystem is totally self contained and self supporting. They don't need sun-energy to exist like basically everything else on the planet.
