Got involved with a married woman. She was supposedly getting divorced. She didn't. She strung me along for like a year and a half until I said ENOUGH.
By that time I was a basket case and didn't care about life. I ended up losing my job and kissed a career goodbye.

It didn't kill me but it didn't make me any stronger, either.

afterthought? it does make me a stronger person because i am withstanding all the bs that people have thrown at me. also taught me that just when i thought i could crack, i choose to hold out a little longer, and things will become better.

16...(and actually just a couple weeks ago)

how it started: met somebody in my HS class who I genuinely enjoyed/loved. that kind of feeling like you've felt like you've known them forever, although both of you have the ability to be honest to each other. a mature relationship despite age (as i've had many before that have not been the same). it's also the type of relationship (for the good or for the bad) where you nearly tell exactly what the other is thinking.

how it ended: she started showing signs of avoiding me for absolutely no reason (and she is the type who would usually smile or make some nice, simple gesture towards me like open the door)

Why it sucked: i lost a lot of confidence in myself, and a lot of respect for the other gender

afterthoughts: it's f*cking ridiculous. basically the stars aligned, both of us had a terrible day, or 1+1 didn't equal two on that day. it's like someone you didn't even know that well suddenly just turned their back on you with no intent of ever meeting or talking to you ever again. that's a really horrible feeling, IMO, since we connected so well just a week or two ago.

So yeah, this blows. I'm still contemplating that she just had a really horrible day or one of those "times of the months" but it's especially bad when you've just met somebody and this happens. I'm sure there's much worse out there though. I have ~75 more years to live, during which I'm sure will occur a worse hell. But this is enough to destroy me for quite a while right now. Especially when it could have been the one thing that could have turned your life around at least a little in the right direction and it instead just ends up being a huge burden and makes it worse. The reason I've drawn such a quick conclusion is that I've had many instances where my worst fears were always confirmed. The oddest thing is I didn't even have a fear in the first place...not even 0.1% of it. It's this kind of stuff that makes you seem like the whole world is turning against you, when the infallible fails.

How it started: went to US for a year, school exchange program. Ended up in ****** boondocks coming from a megapolis, living with Jesus freaks who dragged me to church every Sunday, sometimes two churches (first one, then another - with singing and dancing). I was an emotional wreck because of everything that was going on, and out of money. One day I just broke down, decided to steal some money from the donation box in the church lobby while everyone was freaking out inside, but then resisted the temptation. Went outside onto the golf course and just cried there in the rain.

How it ended: I canceled the program half a year into it. Returned home, but later moved to US on my own and now live happily.

Why it sucked: it was half a year wasted in my life.

Afterthoughts: never again step foot in Midwest.

how it started: GF of four years broke up with me April 1, 2006.
how it ended: Still not over yet. I gave her the cold shoulder for months. Decided to respond to her once and have been trying to work things out this past month. Now I get the feeling she doesn't want to work things out anymore.
Why it sucked: The time that we were broken up was the worst year of my life for that and other reasons. Now I'm re-living the past year of stress.
afterthoughts: I think it's bullsh!t when people say stuff like "whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger." That's just not true. Unless one dies during a tough period in their life, they're going to just continue on living their same miserable life. All tough times do is make one bitter or appreciative of the good times. For me I'm a paradox of nostalgia and bitterness toward the person I think that I want to be with.

I was 28, and I had the worst year of my life between 1998 and 1999.

- My dog died.
- The company where I worked began to go under in a slow, prolonged way. The prospect that I might be without a job were high.
- My wife and I were on vacation. While travelling, my wife got e-coli. She was in the hospital 16 days and nearly died. She had a long painful recovery that lasted for many months.
- One of my best friends, who was also my immediate supervisor, left the sinking ship where we worked. I was forced to take his high-stress job, which entailed doing things I didn't like and knew nothing about.
- My other best friend and his family moved 12 hours away.
- My brother began having seizures. After a particularly bad one, the doctors at the hospital x-rayed his brain. They found a growth the size of an orange. They attempted to remove it, and he died shortly after surgery on Christmas Eve, 1999.
- The company where I worked finally tanked, forcing me to find a temporary job in a real hurry. This meant moving away from my wife and home to an extended stay hotel that was 4 hours away.

Boy, do I feel cheery just thinking about all this stuff.

how it started: Had surgery to correct hydrocephalus in late June 2000
how it ended: Had a third surgery to correct it again in late July 2000
Why it sucked:

I had surgery in June to replace my shunt, the replacement lasted 24 hours before it failed again. Due to a series of unfortunate events it took a month before I was able to have surgery for a third time to replace it again. A month with a mostly non-working shunt and bone-crushing headaches was a living hell. The aftereffects of that episode caused me serious mental and emotional damage. I did not regain my mental balance until 2003, and didn't feel "normal" until 2005.

afterthoughts: I'd like to think that incident made me a stronger person, but I hope to hell I never have to go through that again. I did some things right after that last surgery that I will regret for the rest of my life.

how it started: I went to a rave instead of paying my rent.
how it ended: I left the country.
Why it sucked: I was homeless for months - the cold, the lack of shower and fridge and cooker, the difficulty sleeping, the minimum wage job, the expense of the drugs meaning i could never save enough for a place to live.
afterthoughts: it's probably best you pay your rent instead of going to that party...

If you want to put a "highest time" in as well, feel free to do so.

That was also the best time of my life! The freedom, the constant partying and drug use, the complete lack of responsibility!

how it started: Got the news that my father had liver cancer.
how it ended: He passed away 3 months later.
Why it sucked: He looked perfectly healthy. His health quickly deteriorated. Watching such a strong and proud man suffer and become weak from the illness was tough to bear.
afterthoughts: I still miss him dearly and wish I could've been at his bedside when he passed. He passed while I was at work.

Highest time was the birth of my daughter. Close behind was watching my stock portfolio pass the million dollar mark for two brief days.

Far too many terrible times to pick one. I'll give a basic list:

Being ostracized/shunned in elementary and middle school because of all my special programs and my general attitude.
Being thrown out of my house and living on the street for a while.
My mother dying so young (I was 18).
Getting divorced - well, not the divorce (although that was traumatic), but losing my daughter.
Being accused of molesting my daughter by my crazy ex so she could gain leverage in the ongoing court battles.
Having my daughter move across the country.
The ending of the best relationship of my life.
