It's also sickening that car insurance is mandatory. Must be nice to be in a business where it's illegal if people don't buy your product. I drive used cars, I always pay under 5k. If I had the choice I'd rather save myself a couple hundred bucks a month and take the chance that I get in an accident and end up spending a grand or two to fix it.

How on Earth could you actually own a car and not know that mandatory insurance coverage isn't to protect you but the person you hit?

I'm over 25 now

Are you? Really? REALLLLYYYY?!?!

How the fuck could you be over 25 and think mandatory coverage is there to protect you????

Location: Canada
Must be a nanny-state mentality.

When I got a car I had to put it in my dad's name and his insurance since there was no way I could actually afford insurance on it. I was driving an old Buick Lesabre, do you really think someone driving such a grandpa car is going to do dangerous driving? LOL. Paid like 2k for the car, they wanted like over 5k per year LOL.

lol wut? i have a brand new car + an old beater, pay 220$ a half for comp/coll on the new one and liab on the old one.

maybe canada has traffic violation laws or insurance regulations that force companies to jack the price up. michigan does this, it is ridiculous and causes insurance there to be 2x or 3x higher than ohio or surrounding states.

That's when I was under 25. Now I only pay around 1-2 grand. It's still highway robbery no matter how you put it though, especially when house insurance is like $35/mo and a house is worth much more than a car.

I can't believe people here are defending insurance companies. But that's typical atot, launching personal attacks at me instead of looking at the big picture. I KNOW why it is the way it is, but I don't have to agree with it.

insurance companies just provide the service that you are required by law to have. your minimum limits are mandated by the state/province, not by those companies. they compete for your business, and you can shop around for lower premiums. at least in america. but a lot of it depends on your driving record. get a few speeding tickets or get in an accident that's your fault? your rates are gonna go up, i guarantee it. (well unless you purchased accident forgiveness)

also, i always figured it would be cheaper in canada, since i thought that the national health care would just cover the bodily injury claims, so really the insurance would only have to handle property damage?
