Mac OS 8.6 File Sharing

i have an old iMac Bondi Blue i got from my school. it runs os 8.6 it accesses my DSL line through its built in ethernet. so how can i get it to file share with my windows ME. they both go through the same DSL.

Good luck with that...before OS X, the MacOS was a networking pile of junk. It has been over 4yrs since I used any Windows on a regular basis, but I believe that Win9x shipped with AppleTalk client and/or protocols for networking. Go to your network properties and look for them under 'Add'.

Either replace OS 8 with a PPC build of Linux or BSD, or if you want to keep it, you might be able to get a third computer to act as a AppleTalk<->Samba bridge with some hacking. I know The Kernel has AppleTalk drivers, so there's probably a userspace daemon somewhere, and Samba is easy; the hard part is automating the transfer in a not-kludgy way. That sounds like a fun hacking project.

I may be able to help. I still use OS 9 and it is sort of similar to 8.6

I do not think Windows ME supports Appletalk. Windows NT and Windows 2000 do, however. Look through you applications folder, and see if you can find the app called Network Browser. If you do find it, you can do a network search by IP. If it finds the computer, you may be able to browse through it, though I am not sure. I will boot into OS 9 right now, to see if I can figure this out. I did it years ago, so I don't remember what exactly I did.

EDIT: Sorry, couldn't figure it out. Try this though, go to Apple Menu>Chooser. Then click Appleshare. Since there is no Appletalk on the Windows ME machine, click the button that says "Server IP Address." Then, type in the IP address for the Windows ME machine. It may work for you.
