Anyone have any opinions on when they think the Mac Pro will be updated?

I'm probably going to want to pick one up soon, but it's been a pretty long time since they've updated and I really don't want to buy one just before.

What's this I hear about a new Intel architecture? Is it likely to make it into this update?

I would imagine that they will be updated in the next few months, possibly at MacWorld.

Definitely at MacWorld. They'll get the Nahalem treatment along with a new video card of some sort.

That long? January is still pretty far away. I guess it should be worth it though, those new cpus look really nice and I can probably wait that long....

Impressive new details of next-gen Mac Pro emerge
http://macosrumors.com/2009/01...xt-gen-mac-pro-emerge/

Here are the rough specs of the Mac Pro prototype that we first saw mid-month in a ?batphone? stream from sources on the West Coast, and more recently had several of our East Coast reporters play with hands-on during a source meeting in New York City this week:

*2.8, 2.93, and 3.2GHz Core i7 Xeon 5500-series ?Gainestown? processors with 8MB of L2 cache; previous models had 12MB of L2 per chip but due to Nehalem improvements, new L2 actually performs better ? and the reduced amount improves cost, manfacturing yields, power/heat dissipation, et cetera.

*All versions dual-chip/dual Front Side Bus based; 2.93 and 3.2GHz models available with either quad or eight-core chips creating a total of eight or sixteen(!!!) cores.

*Nehalem re-introduces Intel?s HyperTransport technology which processes two threads on each core ? causing the OS to see 16 or 32 ?logical cores,? respectively.

*Triple DDR3-1333 (!) SDRAM memory busses, forcing memory to be installed in sets of three DIMMs, but offering upwards of 4.8 billion transfers per second through Nehalem ?QuickPath Interconnect? which is a more than 60% boost over the closest alternative DDR3-1066 based design currently on the market.

*There has been some question as to whether Core i7 Xeon supports ECC (error correction/control) FB-DIMMs which have been in the past several models of Mac Pro; the other Core i7 chips do not.

That seems to be Apple's pattern with the MacPro. They've probably hammered out a deal to get the octo-i7s and dual processor mobos to handle them for a price that no one else can touch. So even though the MacPro will cost a bloody fortune for mere mortals, it'll be an absolute steal for the sum of its parts. Meanwhile, people will clamor for the 'midrange', and then either pony up for overkill, or settle for half-baked.

If that's the pattern, (and I don't see why not, it's ridiculously profitable) the midrange will still belong to Hackintosh.

Sixteen 3.2ghz cores...yes please! :Q

I cannot imagine what the average person could do with something like that, maybe not even with Snow Leopard.

Mac Pros aren't really designed for "average person" use, hence the "Pro" term appended to the end. It's designed for professionals

(or loaded home users )

Being a long time PC user, I really see a need for a normal "tower" cased computer in the iMac range. I want to be able to upgrade the video card, even if the selection is limited, add additional drives, and use my own display. I'd even pay a similar price to an iMac, even though I'm not getting a display for the same cost.

Hackintosh definitely fills that niche. For instance, Time Machine backing up to esata felt pretty natural. Backing up my MacBook over the USB interface, not so much.

Yeah it's kind of silly...you have this great all-in-one iMac with just a power cord coming out, coupled with a wireless keyboard and mouse, and then you have to have a big, ugly external hard drive enclosure with power and data cables coming out of it. No room for an external drive. Time Capsule is slooooow for large network backups.

well snow leo has the support, but my question is if they do come out with a mac with 4800s will they allow previous mac users to use the 4800 in leopard? Or make them pay to upgrade?

Or if Snow Leopard will even be Hackintoshable...hopefully we'll find out soon!

I wonder, does the iMac motherboard (or whatever they call it) have any additional drive support? Like, header leads that aren't soldered to a connector or anything like that? If it did, it'd probably be a fun project to re-case it.
