MAC shutsdown randomly

At work we have an old mac (Performa 6300CD) that sometimes shutsdown randomly. This seems to occur randomly because it doesn't seem to matter how long it has been on or how heavily it has been used. It's even shutdown while it is in the middle of the boot process.

Most of the time you can just turn it back on and continue, but every once and a while it refuses to turn back on and you must unplug it. After it has been unplugged for a few minutes it will turn on again.

I tried replacing the battery, and that seemed to help a little. It worked fine for about a week, but now it has started again.

does anyone have any ideas?

Battery?...An external cmos battery I assume? The specs seem to suggest a 55W internal power supply so ... I don't know what the MTBF is for a mac power supply but since they stopped selling that model almost 5 years ago replace the power supply and see if that helps.

I would tend to agree - sounds like a flaky power supply.

Thanks for your help. I kind of expected this, but wish there was an easier answer.

Anyone know where to get cheap used MAC parts? We don't want to put a lot of money into this old of computer.

BTW, yes it was the CMOS battery, sorry that I didn't make that clear.

E Bay is where I get ALL my Mac stuff. Check out Low-end Mac.com for links to used vendors. But from what I have seen they are 2x as expensive as the auctions.

Thanks for the E/Bay suggestion. I found what I need for $6 (shipping is more than the power supply)
