With Steam's refund policy, what's the problem with pre-ordering now?

Granted, I bought mine from GMG, but they've already committed to refunding Batman if you aren't happy after the first major patch is released.

Refund policies empower consumers but the best way to keep publishers honest is to withhold cash until the final product is scrutinized by enough media outlets to make an informed decision. Incentives tied to preordering aren't good for the consumers in the long run. For example, Gamestop wants to work closely with studios/publishers during development to carve up games into preorder exclusive DLC's/bonuses. Even if we assume that 100% of unsatisfied buyers will ask for their money back, (they won't) this practice is bad for us, not paying upfront is the best way to motivate studios/publishers to deliver quality products on launch day.

Getting totally sidetracked here but I'm fed up with the preorder culture and "gotta have it" mentality that gamers worldwide tend to practice. As consumers we lose leverage when some gamers are so weak to temptations that they resort to faking locations via VPN's just to access content a few hours earlier or spend money months in advance as if any given upcoming game is at high risk of "selling out" before they can buy it. Activision and other industry giants prey on this junkie mentality. Personally I was extremely hyped for Witcher 3, I totally expected it to be the best RPG I ever played. And it did yet I lost absolutely nothing by sticking to my "no preorder" rule and waiting for it to launch before buying it.

Again, not saying Mad Max will be a bad game. I'm leaning towards opposite and I see fresh ideas in the way they approached making it but I want it launched and dissected by trustworthy media outlets before I spend my money on it.

I look at from the risk/reward standpoint. First, I take the approach that all games have issues out of the gate. Second, I don't pre-purchase without an incentive (generally, a large price break).

With the number of PC Game outlets that scrutinize games, it's only a matter of days after release that you know whether the game is good or not. However, by that time, most, if not all, incentives are gone and you are forced to pay full price. The caveat here is that you don't use the "gray" key market. Like most consumables for me, price is a huge factor in purchase decision. If I'm quite confident that the game's genre is something I'm interested in, it's something I would eventually purchase and the price incentive is there, then I will take the risk.

Multiplayer needs to die. When was the last time you saw a single player shooter that cracked 15hrs? Original Far Cry? A decade ago?

Deus Ex: HR took me a while(over 20 hours in the game), as did Bioshock Infinite(13hours), Far Cry 2 and 3 about 25 hours each.

This is practically a sleeper so far, there's been so little about it released, I've only come across it twice and both times thought that it looked really good. I like the idea of the batman-like freeflow fighting if they can get the controls right and the car chases look intense and really very beautiful I have to say, the explosions and firey parts being ejected at high speed look absolutely stunning. Hopefully have enough juice to get this on the PC and play it through in 4k.

I'm not pre ordering though, never pre order, just wait for reviews for crying out loud, it's like 24 hours and saves you all the butthurt if the game turns out to be rubbish or a technical nightmare.

I'd just refund through steam. Or make sure there isn't any severe problems beforr you pick it up in a B&M store. I did that with batman. I pre-ordered for PC at the store, found out it was bad on PC so when I got there I exchanged for PS4.

So, is there officially RPG elements in the game? Skill tree? Levels? XP to spend on upgrading the character?

I really like the look of this game, open-world and all but I can't get into the Batman series, which seem to have influenced the action/combat part of Mad Max. If it's just that it's not a big deal if the story and atmosphere are up to the task, which they seem to be.

I'm also torned between PC and Xbox One. When I play Batman on PC (qhich is rarely) I play with a controller. Combat and overall it's more enjoyable on a controller. Mad Max look like it would too since there's a lot of driving and punching

I might grab it on the Xbox One to play on a my 50" and relax on the couch...might be better that way.

IGN gave it a pretty good review.

Either way, I'll pick up via Steam sale during the fall/winter.

Reviews are coming out -- seems ok, not a 100% must buy, just randomly grabbed a few
So might not be bad at a discount but probably not at full price. I was thinking of getting at GMG with the 40% off, but think I will wait anyway... no real rush for this, as never really seen any of the films.

Although the game does not tie directly into any film, but just set in the same world

Polygon Review - Ok, 5/10
Mad Max is a shallow, forgettable experience

Those inevitable wins felt empty, and that's really the biggest problem with Mad Max. The film franchise has always transcended the summer blockbuster genre, providing worlds and characters and scenarios that have stuck in my mind. Mad Max the game is the opposite; it's got chase scenes and big explosions and bloody fights, but nothing to remember it for. In spite of some annoying technical issues and questionable design, Mad Max is functional, but it's fluff, plain and simple.

IGN Review 8.4
Mad Max is a juxtaposition of exciting, thrilling fun set in a world of disgusting, primal depravity – like a singing telegram informing you of a death in the family, or an ice-cream cake with your terminal test results written in frosting. It’s a conflicting place of despair, a personal playground of explosive action and compulsive, unending progression that I can’t wait to get back to, and one hell of a ride.

You're sure about that? Howlongtobeat.com claims 11hours avg for the main story

Yep, zero non necessary exploration and blasting through the game. I did it in one sitting and found the game to not be worth replaying. I paid first day release price of 60 bucks and regret it. It was a good story twist, but I probably should have taken my time with it. Or waited until it was in the bargain bin.

Looks a bit like a batman/Mordor take on Mad MAX (not a bad thing). But i think Borderlands has covered the Mad Max game already and done it about as good as it could be.

As some have mentioned single player seems to be lost in anything but RPGS' now days. Finishing a game in less then 15 hours is a travesty when it costs $60. I don't care if you fill it out with junk quests, silly exploring, easter eggs, level repeats with new missions, mirror levels, fetch quests (ok not to many of these as it seems the ONLY way anybody can extend gameplay nowdays). etc.. Games blow their wad in the first hour it seems. Just because the BF/ COD games are more movie then game now doesn't mean every game has to be that way. I don't agree Multi player needs to die, but you make a game single and Multi player both need to be done right.

So how much racing in the game ( i hated it in RAGE but otherwise enjoyed that game).. is it required?

I'm really enjoying it.

Not sure how not playing it, or "blasting through the game" qualifies as a good & unbiased review.

It's not the greatest game I've ever played, but that's ok. Sometimes lackluster pizza is still good pizza. My 2 cents.

Seems as more and more people play it the average rating is going up across the board.
Was really low on Metacritic (*yes i know) but now its up to 7.9 average.
Seems like its good simple fun.

This game is a surprise. Runs perfectly and is a great value at what it's available for.
