I wouldn't say it was a virus, not at this stage anyway. Mafia needs quite a good spec PC run acceptably and I believe that the Minimum requirements are too low IMO. You have a "creative labs (S3 savage4)" graphics card. I don't know much about these but if I recall it is quite old. Are you running the latest drivers for it. Do you have DirectX 8.1 installed? Try reducing the size of the AGP aperture size in your BIOS to half the size of your RAM onboard your graphics card.

If you can get into the game options, try dropping all the settings to their lowest and raising them bit by bit to find the best performance/visuals.

[edit]

Actually to get into the options you run the Setup.exe installed within your Mafia directory.

I would say that 9 out of 10 times it's the drivers you are using. Try using nVidia 40.72's on their website. I'm using these and are working fine.

Yes, I have that gainward 128MB ti4200 card, and mafi runs beautifully on my machine. Have all the video options for mafia set to the max.

My suggestions would be as follows:

1. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the game ( yea, I know, this 3-CD game takes about 30 mins to install).
2. You're friend could be on to something, do a full scan of your system with the latest virus updates for your antivirus program.
3. I've heard of people having troubles with the 40xx series of nVidia drivers. I, and many gamers swear by the older 3.0.8.2 nvidia drivers. You can get them here.

Yah it could very well be the Win32 virus. There's a really cryptic fix for it posted on M$ support site. Its a DOS fix put out by Symantec, so you might want to give that a shot before you reformat.

ok, slogun, i presently have the 40.72 drivers, so im rolling back to the 30.82, just in case thats the problem.
I ran a full virus scan with the latest definitions, and got NOTHING. so i don't think it can be a virus.
chizow, i searched the symantec site for the error, but there were like 975 results, so i dunno bout dat......

ok, guys, i tried this too, and there seems to be a prob: i installed win98 on another partition [so that i could dual boot and try mafia in win98] but the dual-boot just wudnt run - itd go directly to win98. so i booted the recovery console thru the winXP CD, used the FIXBOOT command and got my dual-boot menu running again. but now win98 doesnt load at all, when i select it thru that menu - mentioning something about that boot sector file being messed, i dunno......wht shud i do to get 98 runnin again?.......jeez, this is beginnin to be a real big pain in da ***.....thanx fer the support, nyways
