???? horrible lights?? Mine got lost and buried in a field for a few years ago and was churned around by plowing and all. Finally found it in a dirt clod, replaced the batteries and it works perfectly. And any slight light tint is due to the sheer fact that light bulbs don't glow a perfect white.

But yes, LED is a good way to go for them. Those white LEDs can be extremely bright
A few weeks ago I half ran over my Maglite. It got stuck under under my truck's tire and I drug it down the concrete driveway before I realized it and could stop. It's scraped up but works fine. I had batteries that corroded a few years ago in it, same with my father and his Mag. Just had to clean them out. I know a lot of pilots and 4x4's that have had good luck with them. Maybe they aren't the best out there, but they work well and aren't too expensive.

It would be great if we could increase stored power by switching around the cell configuration.

Maglite is going to have to deal with the other companies that have already put out LED flashlights. Dorcy, Inova, Gerber, Fenix.. etc.

While I don't like the current maglite selection, except the Magcharger, I hope they make a respectable LED flashlight. Good led color, regulated output, good output, decent size and price.. Progress is always good.

I purchased a 2xAA LED flashlight from target the other day with a 1.5W LED (Rock River). This thing is BRIGHTER than my 3xD cell maglight and pretty close to my 4xD maglight. Only down side is its fixed as a Spot beam and you can't adjust it to Flood beam like a MAG. New LED techology OWNS Incandent IMO.

sometimes you, my fellow ATecher's, confuse and suprise me.
So many of you don't seem to be big fans of Maglite and i don't get that.
For the price you pay (especially at costco) i don't see many better alternatives, they work great, last long, pretty damn tough, and you can crack someone over the head with one =x.
We own a few throughout the house for daily use, and I myself have a Surefire and a Brankman that rivals my Surefires output at 1/3 the price, but for the offering i like mag.
I think sometimes you guys just like to go for the underdogs or the elite not-known-by-general-public brands ex. foobar vs. winamp

however i hate LED lights no matter who makes them so.... good luck to maglite

Part of the hate on Maglite comes from gadget elitism, as you expect. I don't own any myself, but I've read that there are easily superior lights (generally LED) available for a few bucks more (granted, a good portion of a Mini-Mag's cost). Also, beam quality is particularly important to flashlight enthusiasts, and Mags fail horribly in this respect.

Another significant source of the hate comes from the perception that Mag used its patents to stifle flashlight development and maintain its market share, instead of developing advanced products itself. IIRC, both the Arc-AAA and the Pelican M6 were subjects of Mag suits.

Who uses Maglites for light? I thought they were just for bashing people over the head with.

You got every point right on

For me it's all that and the fact that they call it a white light, the mini maglite is more like a yellow/gold color once you compare it to something closer to a true white

light is light, I couldn't give 2 dumps if it came from a candle, led, bulb, firefly, moon. Just so I can see what i'm doing. I don't see how people can spend so much for a single flashlight.

too little too late.. but i guess they can rely on their brand name for people to come back to them. mostly interested in the large d cell mags for their potential as a clubbing weapon. thats multifunction for ya. the little ones were always pathetic as flashlights mainly cuz of their bulb so i guess this solves it

Maglite has been saying this for years. I'll believe it when I see it.

And yes, they are junk. I prefer quality tools. It always pays off.

Plan on using it to fight fires too?

They have a LED upgrade kit for the classic pocket Maglites. Comes with a 3 LED replacement for the bulb and reflector and a battery cover with a toggle switch.
It's a nice little upgrade for your old Maglites.

They have their uses. I use it for hiking and camping. A dim maglite 2AA is useless and a maglite 4D is too big to lug around.

Ask an avid camper/backpacker how much their sleeping bag, tent and other equipment cost. A sleeping bag and tent probably only cost $20-30 each at Target/Walmart.
