While I don't like the current maglite selection, except the Magcharger, I hope they make a respectable LED flashlight. Good led color, regulated output, good output, decent size and price.. Progress is always good.

Out of those brands I've only seen Inova in a store, and it was $45 for a 2xAA. Mag isn't going to have ANY problems.

some people do, i for one don't but i definitely appreciate a good flashlight. I do cream when i use surefire flashlights though, so bright and pwoeful in such a small lightweight formfactor, can't help but to!
Also had a 20,000,000 equivelant candlelight power Xenon spotlight which i ended up selling for a profit on ebay

Nope, not in normal use. LEDs can be popped with significant over-voltage/current, but they're practically impervious to impact.

White LEDs dim over time in use due to phosphor degradation, IIRC, the quoted 100,000 hours of runtime is to 50% of initial brightness. This degradation can be accelerated by driving the LED above spec and/or insufficient thermal relief.

So the answer to Shawn's quesion, in a nutshell is yes!

I bought a 3xAAA superbright LED flashlight at Target for $28, and it is amazing! I actually threw away an old 2xAA maglite after seeing the difference.

Definitely worth $28 as I use it to run at night (there are way too many drivers that can't see at night, even when I'm wearing reflective gear). And just for reference, this thing allows me to see 100yds ahead in pitch black conditions and about 40yds across while the maglite provided only 20yds of front vision at only 5yds across!

The only downside is the beam is not adjustable, but then again it floods everything in front of me so I don't really need the focus. But I do look forward to trying out the mag-LEDs.

??? Maglight sucks? pleas tell me in what way?

I have a 2D cell maglight that was issued to me a few weeks before i got send down for the invasion of panama and carried it with me in the fricken wet jungle. Then took it with me to the big desert for operation Desert shield/storm and did fine. Its now next to my bed and i know when the power goes out it will work, and if i need to bash a intruder in the head it will work.

oh and i put halon bulbs in it.

I felt the same way for a long while that Mag was the best light and they were. Just like other pieces of military equipment, a better one will come around and replace it. The Sherman was a great tank and the M1 Garand was a good rifle, why didn't you have any of those in Shield/Storm? Just buy a nice shurefire light and you will understand why they are better than Mag.

And yes, they are junk. I prefer quality tools. It always pays off.

They are certainly better than those Plastic Eveready or Aluminum/Plastic Garrity flashlights.

Dude, it's a fvckin flashlight.

The elitism of flashlight owners are hilarious. I've seen this on other forums too. You're comparing $400 flashlight to a $40 flashlight... of course i would expect the $400 to be better. But that doesn't make Mags sh1t.

<3 my 6-d cell maglite.
Sure it's not as bright as it could be.. but it has 6 dcells, i didn't buy it because it's 'bright'

If i had my way i'd have a surefire too, but my 6d cell maglite cost me 27 bucks.. with the 6 batteries...

I really like the beam from my $20 3D Garrity. The reflector is faceted, which generally gives a better beam than curved parabolic reflectors.

Another vote for the quality of mag-lite. I don't doubt that you can buy a better flashlight - but price/performance/durability I think they're great. I've owned a few and only replaced them because I've lost them.

My dad had one he left outside or some nonsense for a few years, we found it later with ONE mass of 4 fused-together D batteries inside, as I recall he sent it back and they actually sent him a brand new one... which he has continued to abuse and amazingly it still works fine.

There's not much else that runs on batteries that I remember keeping for more than a few years... of course, flashlights aren't rocket science (well they didn't used to be) but still nice to see a mass-produced but well made product.

It doesn't take a $400 light to make a Mag look like complete & utter crap.

A $35 Surefire G2 Nitrolon (approximately the size of a MiniMag) puts out 60 lumens of perfectly smooth light. For <$10 on Ebay you can get an extra lamp assembly & now you can switch between the stock 60 lumen & the 120 lumen HO lamp.

You'll pay to feed it of course, with the 120 lumen bulb a $2.50 pair of CR123's will last about 20 minutes. But for that 20 minutes all the maglite owners will be scraping their jaw on the ground.

The point to all this is that it only takes a few $$ more than the maglites you all love to get FAR more light, & better quality light. All in a package the size of a MiniMag.

BTW the SureFire G2 is entry level as far as good lights go. It's only marginally more expensive than a Mag, but FAR better. You can spend far more of course, but it only takes $35 to shame a Mag.
