Thanks for all of the replies, in response to this question, the answer is no. he had also built it on the carpet, which i scolded him for. this was my second inclination towards what caused the problem. For all of those who were asking, it was not a huge screwdriver. I advised him to try to return the mobo and hard drive, to see if it worked better with new ones.

Thanks again

I've lost count of the number of pc's I've built over the years. ALL have been built on the carpetted living room floor in front of the tv. Just don't shuffle your feet around and use a ground strap. I wouldn't say I "recommend" building pc's on the carpet. I'm saying that I'm proof it can be done easily without problems.

First of all, is your system overclocked in any way?
Make sure everything is running in spec, that includes correct voltages and speeds. also make sure your power supply is providing clean power, within tolerances. If everything seems ok, disconnect everything but the hard drive and monitor, remove all addon cards except for video and memory, and try again! Good luck!

Throw in a little disclaimer, or the name of your lawer J/k. I try to ground myself, regardless of the carpet used...

when working on a carpet just remember to take your socks of and tap the back of the powersuppy every time you get up and down! I also use a magnetic screw driver! What I would do is set the bios to default then restart. If you cant get into the bios use the cmos jumper on the board or pull the batterie for the night!
