I have a laptop running Win 11. It's an 8th gen i5 mobile processor with 8GB ram. I use the laptop maybe once a month to read email, do basic office tasks, etc. Every time I turn the stupid thing on it just crashes to its knees trying to download a bajillion windows updates and runs the antimalware service executable. There is no way I am getting malware on a computer I'm using once per month for 20-30 minutes. Is there any way to make the antimalware executable less intrusive? I know its supposed to release CPU capacity to other programs, but the computer feels like its grinding to a halt while antimalware is running.

I also have an even older dell laptop I use occasionally, an i7 machine running win 11, and I don't have this problem. I think its a 3rd generation i7.

I really don't have a solution for you, but be real sure to check all windows settings (especially the windows defender/antivirus) and make sure things you don't need are disabled. One of the biggest chores after installing win 11 on an old machine is going through everything to make sure all the fluff and rubbish is turned off.

Sounds like your system is running "real-time scanning." Recommend disabling that and just setting it to run periodically in off times or just set it to perform scans manually.

You can also defer the updating process immediately for a month via "settings/windows updates." Actually, you can defer updates indefinitely that way if you want. You can also download third party installers that allow selective update installs.

Lots of ways to proceed.

How to disable Microsoft Defender in Windows 11
To disable scheduled antivirus scans in Windows 11, you can temporarily turn off real-time protection or permanently disable the service. For temporary disabling, go to Windows Security, then Virus & threat protection, and manage settings to toggle off real-time protection. For permanent disabling, you can change the Startup type of the "Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service" in the Services window.

Good luck
