Hi,

I have D/L some movies that are in avi and mpg format. I have tried to burn them to a DVD and it does not work. I was told that I need to find a program that will reformat so that it can be burned to a DVD and I can play it on my DVD player. I am new to this so sorry for any confusion on my part. I have Nero home edition, and am running xp.
Thanks

I use a freeware program called AVI2DVD. You may or may not, depending on your avi files, also need to download a codec pack like the K-Lite Codec pack first.

Afterdawn has a good Guide on how to use
AVI2DVD.

AVI2DVD also gives you the choice of converting the files into a DVD.iso file which can be burnrd to a DVD using Nero.

I've used AVI2DVD in the past to create a lot of DVDs.

OP: I had problems in the past though with slower systems and converting files to DVD. I'd literally just let a system run overnight doing it because it was too slow. Upgraded to Intel dual-core processor and everything is smooth now. Just wanted to give a heads up.

I've used Nero a lot too to do this. Not sure which version I'm using so I'll let you know.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Nero home edition". If you have a full copy of Nero, instead of the very limited OEM versions sometimes given away with new drives, then you also have NeroVision. NeroVision will do what you want, and do it very handily.

The quality is horrible if you do that. The program will upscale the AVI/MPG to DVD frame size, which ruins quality. Just get a DVD player that can play AVI/MPG movies and you will be better off. There are many that do, just look for the DivX logo on it. They will play XviD encoded movies too. Unfortunately not H.264 encoded or MKV files.

What "program" are you referring to, Nero or AVI2DVD? The quality of the DVDs produced by AVI2DVD are excellent if you use the supplied HC Encoder.

I'm talking about AVI2DVD. It doesn't matter about the encoder, quality is reduced because you are upscaling a smaller frame size to a larger one. It's like taking a picture and increasing the size of it.

I find it much easier just to play them as is with my Toshiba DVD player that supports DivX. Quality is not effected at all.

nero does it, inferior in my experience. esp if its a pal to ntsc or whatever conversion nero will just mess up. either way just understand theres a quality loss with conversion unless you've got some outstanding source material.

who cares about the loss of quality as long as Nero or AVI2DVD can able to convert to DVD without any problem.

Thank you all for the info. I understand that purchasing a DVD player that plays a variety of formats is a good idea, but I would like to be able to lend my copies to friends who may not have the latest player. Therefore that is why I am looking to convert all formats (avi, mpeg, mov, etc.) to DVD, it will work for everyone. What about DVD creator? Anyone have any good luck with that program?
Regards

depends on the quality of the original, and what your definition of horrible is. Obviously when you encode a video file to a new format the quality will go down. I have converted many avi files to DVD. My results have ranged from great to pretty crappy. The best ones didn't look quite as good as the AVI, but looked pretty damn good.

The biggest thing will be the quality of the encoder you use. I created a DVD from a DIVX in Sony Vegas and the output was pretty sweet, it took a lot longer to encode it than a program like AVI2DVD but was worth it IMHO.

DIVX DVD players are great, but I still like good old DVD's because I can set up chapters pretty easy, don't know of anything close I can do in DIVX files.
