Well, we already know they are fast and stable...obvioulsy not the fasest out there but probably the most stable O/S

I say give it up to Apple and IBM for sticking in there. They're the underdogs now but with 64-bit weapons.

Well... the wafer of your CPU core looks like this
and like this

As science tries to achieve the lowest levels of (engineering) entropy at the micron level, things begin to line-up in a *neat* fashion. *Lining-up* signifyies outmost engineering refinement and optimization.

Now... we never look at our CPU core (we couldn't even if we wanted)... but the refinement is there nonetheless.

As an extension of this... it seems like an accomplishment of engineering perfection to achieve such low levels of engineering entropy even at the macro level.

Well if you look at the Apple poll in the off-topic forums... people would actually buy them if they were cheaper. Although the G5 looks real nice... i don't think id pay that much just because it looks like that.

If I had the free money, I'd get one of the dual 2.0GHz machines and a 20" Apple Studio LCD. Having used Unix (HP-UX and Solaris) and played around with OSX, I like OSX a lot. I could do quite a bit with a G5.

And I think the G5 looks pretty nice.

Oddly enough, the G5 reminds me of an IBM RS/6000 server from a design standpoint. I have a few industrial-class RS/6000 servers at work that:

1) Have a ventilated front case design, with large low-flow fans and an elaborate pass through cooling system. From the inside, they look a LOT like the design on the G5.
2) They have an IBM 64bit RISC processor, which are a lot like the processors in the G5.
3) They run a 64 bit UNIX-based OS, just like the G5.
4) They're obscenely overpriced, just like the G5

The most amusing thing to me is that these servers were built back in 1997! So much for having the "first 64-bit processor"!

Apple never claimed the G5 to have the first 64-bit CPU or computer. They claimed to roll out the first 64-bit desktop computer (as opposed to a workstation or a server). Marketing spin? Of course. Is it true statement? Yes (barely). As we all learned from Office Space attention to detail is a good thing.

Looks? How about sticking a high powered PC inside one of these? Tell me that doesn't get you going. Is it just me or does the G5 do completely without cables for things like a harddrive, psu, fans, etc? If so, that's impressive, but Dell servers can do that also.

Can you show me a PC comparable to the dual G5 that costs US$1000?

Whats the point if you cant play games with it? I can find a better looking block of cheese for under $1k.

That is a sweet case Beatle. How much? My guess is probably close to $400. :brokenheart:

Who says you can't play games on it?

The Apple G5 is a beautiful looking machine. Very thoughtfully designed and engineered. It has it's place, but not in my house.

This is why gamers have PCs. You do know that computers can be used for more than just a toy right?

Or some of us have a pc for games, and a PowerMac for everything else. but i guess not everyone has that option.

Not quite...DEC and Samsung unsuccessfully tried to market a variant of the 64-bit Alpha 21164 (EV56) for home PCs back in 1996. It ran on WinNT, used a binary translator (FX!32) to run x86 apps, and was priced and marketed as a home PC. Ultimately it failed, but it definitely predates any 64-bit desktop chip released this year.

Actually I priced it out. A dual 2.8 Xeon Dell with a smaller hard drive and missing a couple of features, but otherwise configured similarly costs exactly $8 less than the dual 2.0 G5.

Let me guess: you don't use your computer to work for a living, do you?

In any event, I was responding to the assertion that one can buy a PC comparable to the G5 for 1/3 of the price. So far, nobody seems to have fallen over themselves in an effort to back this claim up.

As for games, Wal-Mart will sell you an Xbox for less than US$200.

You can do pretty much everything on a PC that a MAC can do and vica versa... So why would you need both?
