In a perfect world, I'd have a PC for games and a Mac for everything else. But I am not willing to pay $3k for a Mac, when my PC can do the same job for cheaper.... if I had the money, I'd have a Mac. But they have to get the price down; don't tell me that Mac parts cost that much more than PC parts when they buy in bulk.

Yea dude,
Now I wish *my* PC was a cheese grater.

As a matter of fact I was looking to drill more holes on it.
It still goes up to 55 degrees C and I have a 120mm exaust fan with 80mm above the cpu and 80mm intake. (not to mention the exaust fan of my bad-ass 450watt PC power and cooling PSU)
As a matter of fact I was planing to go water-cooled (until I saw this G5 and I got depressed).

I prefer to think of my PC and Mac as complementary. Fortunately, I can have both.

A) The rich man says: "I will buy a Rolex; as a tribute to superior quality, engineering, precision, choise of material, fit-finish, and aesthetic appeal"

B) The poor man says: "You are an *idiot*. A Rolex costs $4000 and it may last you a lifetime. But... I can get 33 ($120) Casios. Each Casio will last me about 7 years which means I will be wearing a watch for 231 years and it will be a new one every 7 years (so that I don't get bored).

I guess rich people are idiots?
But if they are idiots, then how come they are rich ?

Yea, but that doesn't help alleviate my depression.

I am still waiting for Aston Martin to drop their prices to just about $12,000 so that I can get one (I love those babies)

So the biggest problem in this whole picture is that I am *poor* and thus I am stuck with a PC .

Can you show me a PC comparable to the dual G5 that costs US$1000?

Whats the point if you cant play games with it? I can find a better looking block of cheese for under $1k.
Who says you can't play games on it?

Hearts doesnt count, and ill bet its really fun to play quake 3 with a one button mouse.

I dont work yet, I am still in school. Never the less, macs are useless to me and all my friends. Wait, i take that back, my one buddy uses his ibook to watch dvds on road trips...Why do you think that the market for pcs outweigh the macs so much.

I was responding to the assertion that one can buy a PC comparable to the G5 for 1/3 of the price. So far, nobody seems to have fallen over themselves in an effort to back this claim up.

As far as buying a comparable pc for a 1/3 the cost, that is between u and one other guy.
If you consider an xbox the only/best form of gaming, then maybe you should stick with your one button mouse and $3k cheese grater.

Gag.

1. Windows are for posers.
2. Apple better make sweet looking cases...they need something to distract you from the fact that you paid 3x more than a comparable PC would cost.

Windowed engine cover...

bR: In a way the G5 has this too. There is a clear plastic panel in the G5 so that airflow is directed with the case side off. They made it clear so you can see, and run, the machine with the side panel removed.

The G5 looks like a cheese grater. Who cares what their computer looks like? As long as the case functions properly and meets all of the needs and wants that's all that matters.

Putting lights and crap on a computer is one of the lamest things I've heard of.

The mac doesn't have a window because nobody wants to look in and see nothing. It is way to clean. I like to see what I spent my money on even when I'm not using it. The Mac looks like some futuristic kitchen appliance.

Pics of mine.

Sorry about the window. I guess I'm a poser. Oh yeah and the lighted fans. If your going to pose you might as well do it right.
Cost:$1800 (self built) including Samsung 191T
Not having you computer mistaken for a cheese grater- priceless.

Cool. Nice cable management. When I get the cash I want to build a nice gaming rig w/a window and lights and all that. Hey, if I'm building something fun by god it's going to look fun.

Nice cabling job. I need to get mine cleaned up, too. I don't have a window, nor do I want a window, but:

1. I am a neat freak. Messy wiring would (and does) drive me nuts.
2. Clean cabling has the side benefit of improving the overall airflow in the case.

Those are the reasons why I'd worry about the aesthetics of the inside of my rig. I certainly don't/won't kick back on Friday nights with a few beers and just stare at my case though.

you funny. the g5 has 3 temperature zones, each with its own temperature sensors. the o/s can control the fans too by anticipating activity that will heat up a certain zone and starting cooling early. no simple case mod at all.

9 fans in a 35~(from memory)db system

you just have to admit defeat one this one. sweet cooling system, harddrives in the back to lower noise. 64 bit computing first, etc. no fanboy religious blindness.

It is indeed sweet and it is not a simple case mod but it seems like overkill. I have not heard my hard drives yet. I like my one temperature zone of 43c under load. Mine is quiet and I get every thing done that I need done with my mere 32bits.

That is all such gimmicky crap. If you wanted to, you could do all of that yourself. An OS that controls the fans by anticipation? Whoopdeedoo! You could create a program that changes your fan speeds to different levels depending on what type of app you're running! HDs in the back for lower noise? For the amount those things cost, how about some dead silent Rocket drives?

I honestly don't see anything there that could compel me to buy a mac.

But on the commercials Macs are so much easier to use than a pc. I mean you just hook up the digital camera and it automatically uploads the pictures. Not to mention it is so powerful it will blow you through walls. Plus the G5 comes ready to paint.

thats your best answer against a finely crafted machine? that you could make one with excessive effort? sure i could program fan speed controllers that anticipate heat output and that could control 9 fans? ugh, and make the hardware to do it, cuz obviously the m/b fan headers aren't gonna do 9 fans. and maybe i could custom craft a case like that. with a little effort i could fabricate a 64bit cpu i suppose too.

and maybe i can make a porsche with my dremil and a large block of aluminum if given enough time

the g5's aren't made for cheapskates who couldn't afford to buy it in the first place, yet scoff at it like they could.

if you can only afford an athlon, deal with reality ok? don't justify envy

So I take it that you are ready to code this fan control app yourself? I know I sure as hell couldn't pull it off and I do some programming and lots of scripting. Think about how integrated this fan/temp control app of Apple's is. It's a part of the OS! Not some 3rd party bolt on that *might* work.

No, you are not giving their thermal solution the props it deserves. I could only dream that M$ would do that for my rig.
