No software support really or anything good so why would you want one unless you were a graphics designer (which I am and I still don't want one).

ROFL. Wow. That's an informed opinion if I've ever heard one.

Originally posted by: walk2Let's face it, hype is hype, of course Dell is going to say the PC is faster and Apple is going to say the Mac is faster - the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Fact is the PPC is a far superior cpu to any x86 and that is not up for debate. Just look at the speeds, the fact we are even suggesting the 2ghz PPC keeps pace with the 3+ghz x86 is a big clue.

As for these systems you all are assembling to compare to the G5 - please do not bother. Sure you can cobble together a bunch of Tawainese parts to make a FrankenPC, you can't compare a monster like that to the G5 which is elegant. Only thing I can say here is that we will probably see the PC companies copy Apple like they did with the iMac and come out with their own cases/systems that resemble the G5, so that's a good thing really.

You're kidding right? Fact is the PPC is far superior to any x86 because it has a lower frequency? Apparently you haven't heard about the Opteron which tops out at 1.8 Ghz right now.

And why can't we compare a home built machine to a G5? Part of the bonus of the PC world is that you can configure your own computer. Once you go Apple, you're stuck. If you want, you can build a P4 box using a full tower, a desktop, or a tiny ITX case. Check out this sweet little box: http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/product_detail.asp?model=MEGA_651

If you want a G5, you get a G5 case. Where's Apple's cool little case like that MSI? Oops, doesn't exist. Guess Apple must not have the lock on innovation you'd like to believe they do.

I'd love to see a dual opteron 1.8 system vs a dual G5 1.8 system (or dual 2.0s when you can get them) up againt each other while both running the same distro of linux. Maybe even use a gentoo install and custom compile everything.

It did ok for what it is. Winning a few, losing more. I mean their top machine has 20% more Hz plus another processor and an exually improved FSB. Richard Kurz, a Maxon developer, has publicly stated scores will go up as the renderer is tweaked for the G5. Remember P4 performance when it first came out?

The way Apple has priced a G5 it's pretty clear the best deal is the dual 2GHz. An ok initial showing IMO. Of course relative to where Apple was a few months ago this is a pretty big damn change.

Apple has been way ahead in case internals for a long time - they've been doing a neat job for a while now. I'm not awfully impressed with the overall look of the G5 case though...although it's not bad.

I really have no major complaints about Apple, and they sure have made some nice products, but I prefer PCs for their greater functionality and the fact that I can put one together myself and for much less money than many of Apples computers cost... I've also been very happy with all my PCs since the advent of Windows 2000.
