Was there recently a senator who is trying to get a bill into congress saying that we should have MANDATORY MILITARY SERVING?

What's your thoughts on this if this is really true?

Well, if it happened I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't be eligible because the USA is becoming the land of the fat people...

But if it were mandatory, wouldn't that mean harsh consequences like either getting in shape and ship out, or go to jail and be Bubba's new friend?

I haven't a clue. I just read about this on another forum claming that there is a senator who is trying to get a bill for mandatory military service.

Boot camp and basic training have a miraculous way of causing fatties to shed pounds. If you don't cut it in the first go-round they recycle you to start all over again. If your only problem is weight, the military knows how to get you in shape. They control your diet, your physical activity, your sleep and your bowel movements. You WILL lose weight and make it through basic.

Mandatory military service is not needed or desirable. The US does just fine with its volunteer forces and I'd rather have people in the military that wanted to be there rather than required to be there.

If we don't get this economy jump started, the only jobs available will be military. Bush is turning us into the same as a No. Korea, with a failing economy and a military war machine as the only way to put beans on the table.

He made a poor choice making his "Axis of Evil" statement, in public, to garner support from his constituants. He has no tact and zero foreign policy diplomacy education. He is hell bent to get a war started with everones children fighting but his own (just as his Daddy did for him during Viet Nam war).

What ever happened to going after terrorism, the people that attacked our country? What a dismal failure that has been. Its all shifted to Bush picking a fight with his Daddy's lost oppurtunity for greatness. Pathetic.

If he is going to do it, put up or shut up. This war shouldn't be for ratings at the polls, or re-election fodder. It should have been handled by the military with a need to know basis only and at a time that 3as suitable for a win win ending. This has been the most botched up attempt at getting things done I have ever seen. Politics have no place in miltary planning, and a politician should not be Commander in Chief.

If he starts one more flair up on this planet, we arent going to be able to contain the wrath of the world at large. If we go to war with Iraq, it had better be blaintly obvious that we are in the right, that no other alternative exists , and we or our allies are in eminate danger; otherwise history will show this as Bush's private war against the guy that laughed at his Daddy's face.

(Trust me, I want Saddam ousted and wasted, and Iraq to have a peace that we enjoy, same as I want for Afghanistan and North Korea. Anything that doesn't resemble a democracy with freedom of choice and peace and prosperity for all is an anaptha to me, but somewhere along the line we have lost focus on Osama, and that is very disturbing.)

not a good idea. as dparker says, it would cost a fortune and i'd rather have better tech and less troops than the opposite. Plus we live in a pretty free society. A draft can be reasonable in times of emergency, but having it full time all the time is fairly oppressive if you ask me. I think it would take some sort of a drastic regime change in the US for us to see something like this. I think it would help the kids of today grow a pair of balls, but that isn't the governments job.

You forgot to mention the contract he'd have to sign. The contract would stat that if he ever returned to the US, he must join the USMC and at LEAST make it through BC.

I have a heart murmur, asthma, Poland's Syndrome (missing pec), and bad hearing. I don't think the military would take me, but I wouldn't go anyway if it was required.

Gunnery Sgt. Hartman: WHAT IN THE HELL IS THIS, PRIVATE PYLE?
Pyle: Sir, a Jelly Donut, sir.
Gunnery Sgt. Hartman: Are you allowed to have a jelly donut in the barracks, Private Pyle?
Pyle: Sir, no, sir.
Gunnery Sgt. Hartman: And why is that, Private Pyle?
Pyle: Sir, because i'm too heavy, sir.

As someone who served I think that this is a bad idea.

I do think that in times of crisis a draft is exceptable and I also think that if you live under the cloud of freedom provided you should seriouly consider serving. However the military is not for everyone and forcing people to do it would ony create more problems then we already have.

and tripleshot I just relized how misguided you are.

There's no frickin' way i'd accept manditory military service, though on the upside probably people going to college/uni would get to skip it - since this is what places like Portugal do. Of course there's another way to read that - the more educated tend to be better at kicking up a fuss + are more likely to be making donations. Also leads to underclasses being forced into the military whilst the upper classes escape it (espcially on a poitical model like US where college education is mostly private funded).

Anytime you force someone to do something to moral becomes aweful and this will affect our fighting forces negitivly. No general I have ever heard is advocating such a plan. We have the best force in the world IMO because it's voluntary and pretty selective for most occupations. Plus people want to be there are are willing to make the sacifice.
