Honestly, I just can't see this "Mandatory Military Service" hoopla going anywhere so I won't even worry about it.

Complete BS. The US is quite a long ways off to be compared to N. Korea economically. And as far as I know we're still going after Al Qaida and their ilk; it's just you and the news agencies that have lost interest. It's always been said it would take a great deal of time and be an ongoing effort and that you won't see results on a day-to-day basis being reported. Sorry it's not all wrapped up in a week for you and you can't handle the idea of multi-tasking in the region.Originally posted by: Tripleshot

We would have a big ass military. Who would pay for all of this?
If we don't get this economy jump started, the only jobs available will be military. Bush is turning us into the same as a No. Korea, with a failing economy and a military war machine as the only way to put beans on the table.
He made a poor choice making his "Axis of Evil" statement, in public, to garner support from his constituants. He has no tact and zero foreign policy diplomacy education. He is hell bent to get a war started with everones children fighting but his own (just as his Daddy did for him during Viet Nam war).
What ever happened to going after terrorism, the people that attacked our country? What a dismal failure that has been. Its all shifted to Bush picking a fight with his Daddy's lost oppurtunity for greatness. Pathetic.
If he is going to do it, put up or shut up. This war shouldn't be for ratings at the polls, or re-election fodder. It should have been handled by the military with a need to know basis only and at a time that 3as suitable for a win win ending. This has been the most botched up attempt at getting things done I have ever seen. Politics have no place in miltary planning, and a politician should not be Commander in Chief.
If he starts one more flair up on this planet, we arent going to be able to contain the wrath of the world at large. If we go to war with Iraq, it had better be blaintly obvious that we are in the right, that no other alternative exists , and we or our allies are in eminate danger; otherwise history will show this as Bush's private war against the guy that laughed at his Daddy's face.
(Trust me, I want Saddam ousted and wasted, and Iraq to have a peace that we enjoy, same as I want for Afghanistan and North Korea. Anything that doesn't resemble a democracy with freedom of choice and peace and prosperity for all is an anaptha to me, but somewhere along the line we have lost focus on Osama, and that is very disturbing.)
IIFC the week after Bush's inauguration activitity in the No Fly zones increased dramatically. Was it Bush ordering aggression or Saddum responding to a New Bush? That I couldn't say.And I'm sorry but Bush isn't starting anything although you would like to make it out that way.

Or was it increased activity that was overdue? Honestly, I couldn't really say either because I don't have any information about that or what may have led to an increase in activity. In any case, you cannot argue that activity concerning Iraq has not stepped up dramatically in recent months. And I have no complaints about that as I think it's getting the job we want done and I still think we're not going to war unless Saddam gets belligerently stupid.Originally posted by: JellyBaby

Well, if it happened I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't be eligible because the USA is becoming the land of the fat people...
But if it were mandatory, wouldn't that mean harsh consequences like either getting in shape and ship out, or go to jail and be Bubba's new friend?
Those were the words I remember CNN using. I have no numbers on sorties. Can you quantify "dramatically increased activitity"? Like what was the average sorties before and after Bush?
They've learned to keep the media on a leash (and lets face it the media don't exactly holler much about it) so it's hard to get anything solid on modern day military activity.Or was it increased activity that was overdue? Why not?? Boot camp would do some of the fast food tubbies a lot of good. And something to do for the mindless minions sitting around watching TV.

maybe it was because Iraqis were taking potshots at our aircraft in the "No Fly Zone" and we responded to their action.

What is your basis of this claim? Media actually have more access to our military activities more than ever.
During Gulf War, we actually have media peeps all over our Aircraft Carrier documenting every sorties we flew.
And it was same on the ground.
So if you have factual data to support your claim, enlighten us.

I just love it when anyone @ ATOT mentions the draft or any from of mandatory military service.
What a bunch of wusses.

He says in the article that no congressman's child goes to war, and wants them to realize how bad war can be. So why would mandatory service show them that? Their kids would be in rear jobs or something else. I am prime time age for it, and don't want to do it. As I have said before, I think I can better serve my country by finishing my college education and using knowledge to serve.

Well, coming from Taiwan where there is mandatory service, listening to all the stories of people in my family back there... it's not the most enjoyable thing. But for Taiwan... it's a neccessity to protect the freedom they enjoy.
I think although it is prolly a good idea in theory (get rid of the PE-hating fatties) I don't think it'd be possible to do correctly with such a large nation. I can see it being added if our nation really needs it. Especially if done right, it would add character to a lot of people sorely missing it. Prolly make some people not take our freedoms for granted so much. Even after 9/11 I think people are no different in that respect.

And what is it that you intend to serve?

It appears that an awful lot of you think you can better serve your country by staying out of harm's way. Interesting.

Yeah, who needs doctors, lawyers, policemen, firemen, mechanics, computer techs or people doing any other civilian job when there's a war to be faught?

I had to do that in Germany and really did not like it. Since you have to do it anyways the pay was like $7 a day (a gallon of gas is about $4).
