I had e-mail from Mander back on 1/4/01, so he's alive and well. He was curious about the 4,000/day RC5 blocks he was still getting. I explained about the Phantom Flusher, but he seems to have picked up a bit of cracking power in the last few days. Go Mander!

Hopefully he can keep this growth rate for the next three weeks or so, 10k growth a day.

Anyways, I'm glad he's back, our great legend.

Mander was the first Mega Cracker. Did approx 220Mkey/s. Or was that 220,000 blocks a day? One of the two.

As his participation chart shows, Mander started cracking RC5 back in May of 1999. His stats were great and kept him at the top in the dailies and quickly got him into the top 100 overall. At that time, I was putting out 15 to 20K blocks per day, but this Mander guy was about to pass me. So, I sent him an e-mail, asked him about his setup and BOOM, he joined our team. He had been part of a Compaq team, but they were all bored with it, so he came on over and was very active in our forums helping with network problems, pproxies and Remote Cow usage. Mander's secret power was a room full of multi-processor Compaq Servers that were running Beta Operating Systems from Microsoft, so they needed to be load test, right? All of them networked, on 24/7, so it put out great numbers. Anyway, Mander's bosses at Compaq decided that they wanted to support a Compaq SETI team, so we lost a great cracking power. Then, Mander left Compaq and now works for VJungle (www.vjungle.com) and still keeps in touch.

crap - just noticed that I'll drop out of the top 100 RC5 overall list in a day or two.

Yeh, those days were great! Before the time of the mini-teams, it's fun to watch Mander, JonB, and Netopia's stats moving in the daily stat page in both Mika's and DNET's page.

I thought they were the reason that the mini-team was form, because, small producers like us couldn't compete with these guys.

JonB, how about reconfiguring your herd to dump through MIKA:}

When I first signed on, I was looking through the TA member participant histories and drooling all over Mander's numbers. PLEASE let this mean he's landed another monster herd. PLEASE. Pretty please!

Damn, I was just up lookin at things... Wow...

50,261 blocks were completed yesterday (0.00007314% of the keyspace)
at a sustained rate of 156,155 KKeys/sec! Ranked 51 for the day.

This is about 21% of the rate of this participant's best day ever, which was
16-Jul-1999 when 236,280 blocks were completed at a rate of 734,096 KKeys/sec.

YIPPEEEE!!!!,

If things go right I'll be pushed to fourth place on Mika's on a regular basis! What a wierd and wonderful team that I can rejoice at the prospect of being displaced to a lower spot in a contest!

Hey Mander... c'mon dude.... ASS LAMINATE!

Just for impressionable newbies looking in, please note the wink. I've made a quick decision to go a little OT just so that people don't get alarmed or misinformed.

I can't speak for all the MT's (nobody here can do that) but each MT came into being for its specific purpose and I suggest that the great majority, but not all, came about for one of two reasons:

1. To acknowledge that there was more than one person cracking under a single email though only the "primary" was a member of TA or this forum. (Subsequently many "silent" partners have joined up or become active here).

2. To bring an extra element of fun to the "game"

I don't believe that any MT exists for the notion of "taking on individuals" in the Stats nor do the MT's gain any particular excitement from moving ahead of individuals from TA. (DPC may be another matter) In fact, when the Feds (my own team) catch up to an individual we just bow our heads in awe. What some of these guys have done and are doing is just marvellous.

An example of an MT that came about for reason 1. is TA Cube (aka The Borg). Russ recruited his good friend DanC. He wished to acknowledge the efforts of his friend who had not even heard of Anandtech. Picking a Star Trek theme he retired his individual stats to a new entity TA Cube.

The Crackheads started the same way.

The Feds came about because Engineer was having an individual race with three other TeAm members and he thought there could be fun to be had in following the Star Trek theme of Russ. The Feds immediately went on to "challenge" the Cube to an assimilation duel. Both MT's work closely together to keep TA at No. 1 in the world.

The Star Trek theme is popular - now we have Species 8472 and The Dominion as well. Personally I'd like to see the "Ferengi" representing traders from the Hot Deals forum and perhaps "Klingons" representing the first person shooters from the gamers.

Talking MT's without mentioning the noble and dashing Seti Cavalry would not be fair. These guys have come rallying to a cry for help.

TWTA and giantnt4vizmechthunderstorm exist to have fun and cooperate in the venture.

One team that never seems to get a mention is Red's Crack Marines. They have probably been around the longest and have been very quiet (but not in daily output). Well done Marines.

One sound reason for MT's was posted in this forum by a DPC guest. I used it in my sig for some time.

Now back to the topic: Hey Mander.......Welcome Back. Were you ever aware how much Russ loved you?

HEY! I ain't no stinking mini-team! Species 8472 is me all by myself!

It is sort of frustrating managing all of these machines by myself and then watching teams with each person having to put in less effort pass me by... but then it's the TEAM's succeeding that means the most.

Lead us Mandrew...

Anyone remember that episode?

Hey Joe, no offense, you are an awesome contributer and nobody admires your efforts more than me. (BTW MT's don't stink and their individual members do put in huge efforts! )

I only saw half the episode and have been waiting for a re-run on cable. Hasn't happened yet.

There was a real point to my post: MT's don't take any "Pleasure" from rolling past another contributor on TA. Sometimes there'll be a tip of the hat acknowledgement (done in awe) but MT's don't skite about passing individuals on the stats. The public declaration of an output as an MT is the acknowledgement that it is a combined effort and therefore not comparable to the efforts of a single person. It's apples and oranges. Nonetheless, an MT needs to track it's performance (just like an individual does) so we use the tools provided.

Did Species ever come back in another episode?

Dantoo, the part about "stinking" is from a movie.. though I feel stupid now that I can't think of what it was. I know that everyone does their part and that it all counts... which is why I've always stuck with the team.

About Species... they were in (I think) either 3 or 4 episodes. The last was with the Herogen (sp?) hunting them down as prey.

Laterz,

Joe

Netopia:

This may not be the particular reference you are thinking of, since at least a half dozen different movies used a variant of this phrase, but my favorite would have to be from Wierd Al's UHF: "Badgers? We don't need no stinking badgers!"

Far ...

That line is a take-off of Blazing Saddles. And the original was badges, not badgers!

PS For anyone that isn't familiar with him, early Mel Brooks movies are awesome!
