Got a new Fridge delivered. While setting up, I noticed a couple of things. Shelves are configured a bit different as to drawers and bins, but what got me was what was missing. Old one front, new one rear:

They're interchangeable. In fact I put one of the old into the new box because I preferred the bin setup.

I wonder how big of a bonus some Exec got for saving 8 cents on the side rails?

If you come back later and tell us that lacking the side rails caused it to break, then I better appreciate the difference. That's what irks me more about penny pinching, when it causes a premature failure.

Is it any more difficult to use? Does it slide out the shelves and do you ever do that? Heh, I can't even remember if my kitchen fridge shelves slide out as I never try to do that, largely because I have a lot stacked up in the back that might fall down a level.

I've never seen any that do that. There is normally a "stop" at the front of the rail the shelves sit on that requires you to lift the front of the shelf up slightly to side it out.
Remember refrigerators don't have an anti-tip bracket like properly installed stoves do, so there's that liability thing going on.

The issue is more likely when removing or replacing the shelves for cleaning. The new ones with those exposed edges are more risky to handle in a sink or laundry tub and you don't have the edges to hold onto, so it may be easier to slip.

Sure they're tempered, so there won't be shards, but broke is broke.

I think I've taken my shelves out an average of once every 6-10 years or so, instead just wipe them in place, but this brings up a good point. Maybe.

If those side rails make a good seal, then they can self contain a minor liquid spill to that shelf instead of running down to the next level, and just be wiped up without removing the shelf. If they don't make a good seal against the glass, then liquid is going to get down inside and be more of a pain to clean out.

Backup up a bit, did you not see this fridge in a store first and had the chance to see the shelves? I might buy some deeply discounted fridge online for some use where I wasn't picky, that it just needed to hold beverages or something, but there's no way I'd buy my primary kitchen fridge online without seeing it in person first, poking and pulling on everything.

... except maybe during Covid, if I had wanted to stay home and stock/choices were poor so just wanted whatever was available delivered ASAP. That's more true for my deep freezer if it failed, value of food in it is higher and if it were the kitchen fridge that failed instead, I have plenty of ice and frozen tomato blocks in the deep freezer it that I could transfer to a failed kitchen fridge and keep food safe for a week+.
