I'm traditional, old-fashioned. I plan to do ask her parents for blessing on me proposing to their daughter. I already know they would be happy with it, but I want to do it anyway. How did you?

A. tell them that she is pregnant

or

B. tell them that you have come to the conclusion that your daughter is the one, and joking say admit that this is a formality and that regardless of what they say you're going to go ahead of it anyway. The look on their face will be priceless

If you have a camera, please tape it:

Her parents wanted me to ask for their permission, and when the time came, it was basically a sit-down with her father. "May I have your blessing" works just fine.

The funny thing was, I was planning to do this with my wife's father before marrying her... but when I found out that he expected it, I said "fsck it" and headed for Vegas.

The guy ain't exactly father of the year, but when he started running interference and trying to map out our future and the future of her sister as well (who got married a year earlier), I decided to put the screw to the bastard.

I didn't ask her parents, I asked my wife, cause you know, its her opinon that mattered in the matter. Who cares what they say. Well rather let me ask you this. If they say no are you gonna break up with her?

I took her dad aside and told him that I had something to show him. Pulled out the ring, and said do I have your blessing to ask your daughter to marry me?

I just asked him if I could talk to him for a minute, and then asked if we had his blessing... it's not that hard, and I think it is still a good thing to do. I have a 13 month old baby girl right now, and I really hope her future husband will do the same.... many, many, many years from now...

I didn't. Wasn't their decision.

...Actually, it was somewhat discussed...
It was right after Christmas. My dad used to be a jeweler and so we both casually asked him who had the best diamonds and so he kind of knew what we were doing and we were talking openly about things with him.

It made him feel good that we let him know what are plans were, but Wiz is right, he never really asked my father.

I can understand why some like to do that, it does show respect for the girl and her dad, but i really don't think it to be necessary.

and then you bought their daughter b00bs!

now THAT he did NOT approve of.

I'm not married yet, but rather engaged. Anyway, her grandfather is a semi-retired jeweler and had an awesome stone that we wanted. Beans sorta got spilled that way.

As for her parents, we don't like them. Wouldn't have asked, regardless. It's an old tradition that is fading out with good reason. My parents, on the other hand, have practically known since we first started dating.

I took both the father and mother-in-law out golfing and asked them on the 4th green.

I was thinking of doing it, but I really don't get along with my girlfriends parents. We've sort of negotiated a truce. So I'm not sure if i'm going to or not.

edit: I can't spell!

I asked, it's a good way to make sure things stay happy in the marriage.

First of all, my father-in-law is about 260lbs, 6'4" has a handelbar mustache and wears those glasses that go dark when he's in the light...

Anyway, I'd intended to ask him a few times but kept chickening out. So, I gave him a call friday morning from my apartment @ the university (she and her parents lived about an hour out of the city) and asked him if I could go out for lunch with him. I figured I was locking myself in this way. Anyway, I went to his workplace and we took his truck to the restaurant. We sat through a very awkward meal. After we ate he needed to go by the bus depot to pick up some stuff, and my wife's sister works there. She came out and chatted w/ me a little... so she knew what was up. Then we got back in the truck drove to his work and the whole time I'm wondering when I'm going to ask...

We pull onto the parking lot and I saw..
"I have something I'd like to ask you."
"oh, do you need something?"
"ummm...."
Then I blurted it out. All was good after the fact, but I think asking him was harder than asking my now wife.

That evening I got engaged. Tons of fun.
