I think shutting down the war on drugs would help some but not enough.
It would be the single most effective thing we could do. It is not the end, just the first step. But it is the best step. It would easily be 100x more effective than an assault rifle ban. Let's do the best thing and then re-evaluate based on the results.
The only way banning guns won't work is if Americans are savages. I don't think they are.
I'm trying really hard to get you to explain what this would look like (a gun ban). How would we do this? What would be the consequences? Are the consequences worth it? Has a single other country done this...how have they done it...and what are the results?
Look at the stats, other countries ARE succeeding.
WHICH ONE??? Which country has outright banned guns? How would it work here? Are you ready to force 10s of millions of people to make a choice: (1) give up possessions that would NEVER be used to hurt anybody or (2) Go get prison raped. It's a shit choice and you need to be fucking sure you like that outcome and it is better than not forcing that choice.

Fucking HOW? Would you personally be part of door-to-door swat raids to take guns from people who would never use them to hurt someone? Would you risk your own shit or would you send someone in your stead? It is one thing to say you think they should all get melted down and an entirely different big-boy problem to make it happen in a nation that largely believes their God thinks they should be allowed to have these things.
Possibly making the 2A shoulda-been-fu*k-stains watch but only if they promised to cry! And I would do it all very forcefully without consideration for those against me.
You would personally do this? With guns? Swat armor? How is the world a better place with violent confiscation that it is without it? Have you crunched any numbers? What would be the human cost of accomplishing this vs not doing it? How about personal use of guns for self defense? Would you use guns to get your way and would the irony of letting you and your people use guns to get your way even register with you? I'm not sure you have a big picture view of how to prevent gun violence without using gun violence to accomplish it.
