Maxtor 30gig $41 clearance

Seen these clearanced for $41 at Staples. Might be a good deal with coupons or if there is a manufacturer rebate on these.

lol what? well didn't you do a reserach on it to see if there is a rebate on it? and usually coupons are applied to amounts 50, 75, and 100+

you'd probably get 5 dollars off a $40 item.

but anyhow, i just bought an 80 gig for 41 dollars (AR, tax, etc.)

btw, this is over a dollar per gig, most are looking for 50cents and under per gig

out of curiosity, why would anybody want a smaller drive, when you can get more than twice the size for the same price?

not sure if you tried to answer the question about why somebody would want to get a smaller drive when you can get one that's more than twice as big for the same price

because there's another deal going around where you can get a maxtor 80 gig IN STORE pick up.

but yeah whatever swings your way i guess.

Great, no.. Good, I would say yes.

Yes, you can get an 80gb for $41 AFTER rebate but there are people who will not do rebates at all and need drives to put in systems they are selling and cannot do multiple rebates... IMO this is definitely Hot Deal forum worthy. Thanks CATASTROPHY

bought one Monday for a build - nice out-of-pocket price. of course, I did get this drive two months ago at a different staples for $32.50 on clearance PLUS a $30 rebate, but that was definately YMMV...

As far as who would prefer a non-rebates deal like this - I don't mind waiting for rebates for myself, but earlier this year my Grandmother's hard drive crapped out (too much Kazaa porn, maybe ). I would have much rather gotten this 30gig deal for $40 rather than an 80gig for $80 with $40 in mail in rebates that SHE had to wait for. And trust me, she'll never get close to using 2 gigs of that drive.

Yea, I guess building for grandmothers might be kind of rare, but I bet some people here build computers for friends/relatives with little concern for drive size.

How about because some people want to buy multiple identical drives for a raid array, and there is a limit on how many rebates you can submit (usually one).

hehehe, I have to agree unless its something you REALLY need to buy or cost hundreds of dollars with a big reabte kinda like the Dell PC with the 2 $100 rebates and of course need a extra PC.

Say, if my grandmother needs a replacement drive TODAY... $40 is nothing. Where are you getting a 60GB drive same day no rebates or other hassles?

I'm another member of the "f' rebates!@#!" crowd. Especially after waiting some 9+ months for my Umax rebate to the point that the scanner was now selling below the after rebate price, and I forgot why they were sending me a check. I only look at out the door prices. $40 isn't bad for a good size drive that'll suit most people. Here at work I have a 40GB drive, I'm using 4 of it.

I will admit I like bigger drives also -- Bigger is better...

But the truth is my 160gb drive only has 11gb used. Mostly pictures... Since downloading music is not "a good idea" anymore I really do not see filling the big drive anytime soon.

The 30gb is a good deal for the majority of people (not Anandtecher's). My parents and most of my relatives would never fill 30gb's....

$40 for a 30gb is defintely warm.....

Well, I recently upgraded my MB, CPU, and Ram. this leaves me with my old 1.6 gig P4, 1 gig of PC2100, and an ASUS P4B266-c. so with this HD, a cheap decent vid card, and a cheap case I have a system I can give someone for X-mas, or sell to somebody at school.

The Maxtor 30gig drives are the new-fangled half-inch height drives. These are better for air-flow than bigger drives, and probably would be a help to those building SFF or small rack-mount systems. I've sought these drives out for those applications and paid more for the privilege. There's a place for the $30 WD 200GB SE (thanks HDers!) but there's also a place for these deals.
