Maxtor Hard drive 250gig

I came across a Maxtore 250gig hard drive with 8mb buffer for $130. I was wondering if this hard drive will be a reliable one. Could you guys please tell me what to look for in the hard drive the next time I go to the store and look at its specifications. Thanks.

i looked into seagate and I the hard drives. It says that the 250gig seagate is SATA. I looked at the interface of my current hard drive and it is Ultra ATA/133. Does that mean that i can not use SATA in my computer? What exactly is SATA?

Is it worth $25 price difference to go from WD to Seagate 250 gig SATA. Seagate has a 5yr warrantee and WD has a 3yr

SATA is Serial ATA, its a new kind of interface.

What motherboard make/model do you have? You may have SATA ports already. Even if you don't, you can get a SATA controller card for a mere $20. All newer motherboards have SATA onboard.

I doubt that I have SATA, as I bought this comp 4 years ago. But, if i want to stay with the interface i currently have, do i specifically have to look for Ultra-ATA/133 or ATA/133 on the packaging of the hard drive?

ATA/100 ATA/133 or IDE should all work. Anything that is SATA should say so.

People don't like Maxtor as much as other brands right now, they think the drives are less reliable than other brands.

If you are shopping at newegg.com you can find 200 and 250 GB ATA/100 and ATA/133 drives from Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital as well as Maxtor. You can also find cheap, quiet, reliable drives from Samsung but only up to 160 GB.

This this a speed transfer difference between ATA/100 and ATA/133. Would i be able to tell the difference between 100 and 133?

Not at all. The Western Digital raptor is the fastest desktop drive out (and it's SATA) and it barely hits 72MBps. Few IDE's even saturate ata66

yes you do have to look. And you most likely do not have SATA. I'd go with a seagate if i were you.

If you plan on keeping this hard drive in a new machine I would highly advise that you get a Seagate SATA, and get the $20 koutech controller.

I personally bought a Maxtor 250GB ($60 after rebate) and have had no issues. It has only been install for 6 months, but in that time it has worked great. It's only downfall, and this is a big one in my computer, is that it is freaking LOUD!. It is soooo much louder than my WD 40GB, WD 120GB, and Seagate 200GB drives. I can only hear those if I put my ear up next to the case and then only when I have my fans at 8 volts or lower. The Maxtor can be heard no matter what.

Still, I can't complain because I got a darn good price on it. If there is not much difference in price I would get a WD or Seagate, but if it is a bargain then go for it.

Go with the cheapest one out of the WD or Seagate, they are both good hard drives.

I have 3 of those Maxtors for about 4-6 months, and they have been reliable so far. I use them mainly to store my DVD images. They do however, seem to run very hot. I had them in an open external enclosure and they were warm to hot when touching them. I put all three in one PC and with the cooling I have overall temps have not increased significantly. I'm still a bit worried as to the longevity of drives that run so hot, but so far no problems.
