Maxtor Hard Drives

Hi guys. What are they like, more specifically, the 40Gb Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 (5T040H4)
7200rpm, UDMA100? Reliability wise. Am unhappy about my 75GXP freaking out on me all the time, and qould like to know what drive to go for for future reference.

I have 2 30 gig DM Plus 60's that have been running fine for several months now, haven't had a problem.

i've had maxtor drives for the last few years and none of them have failed on me. maxtors have always been reliable and i would reccomend then to anyone

I have three in my current system, no complaints. Had two in an older one, no complaints there either. If you want to stick with IBM, go for the 60GXP series. Bought one of those for my bro, no complainst there either... 75GXP was just a crappy model.

If you buy a retail drive, make sure it is not actually a quantum fireball. Maxtor is selling off all of Quantum's old stock since they have acquired them. I bought 2 40GB drives at Best Buy and they were quantums when I opened them up at home.

It goes like this. buy 100 of ANY brand hard drive and out of that batch, 5-10% will end up with problems. Drives produced today are pretty dang reliable in the sense that over the years the advancement of technology and the simple "find out what works methodology" of the manufacturers has pretty much eliminated the weak designs and companies from the picture. I like Maxtor and Western Digital as my top picks with the particular order being based on which I can get a better deal on...

I recommend getting Plus60's sucessor, D740X, it is one of the fastest 7200rpm hard drive right now.

It might be good for you people to have access to support from Maxtor in the USA... but here in Australia they are lagging behind the rest of the hard drive manufacturers in that sense. I am keen to purchase a Maxtor drive but when I look on their web site the model numbers and descriptions don't match the model numbers in this country (Australia). So one would imagine that if I bought a Maxtor drive I would be diving into the unknown a little bit.
I have found that Seagate drives are very good also and I am surprised to have not seen their name mentioned in this forum. Fujitsu also make very reliable drives... but in Australia Fujitsu are running into slight cash flow problems and I think are looking to scale back their operations... whitch would be very unfortunate because I don't think they have given it their best shot.

i have the drive your referring to. very quiet, fast, and i had no problems with it at all.
i highly recommend it.
