Maxtor Warranty....

I brought a Maxtor Diamondmax +9 at the end of Janurary 2003. The drive has been making erratic seek noises lately in high activity periods, so I decided to pop onto Maxtor's RMA site. Although as I was reading the details from the drive, I kinda knew I was out of luck when it read "manufactured in 05 december 02".

However, I have a reciept showing that I purchased it at the end of Janurary. Just wondering if anyone else has managed to convince Maxtor to allow an RMA given that the warranty usually starts from the day purchased.

Yeah, checked, says "out of warranty".
I knew it had a 1year warranty, but didnt want to believe at the time , that this was due to drive reliability going down the toilet too

your warranty is 1 yr from the date of purchase. call their customer service and explain and i beleive they will honor the warranty based on the purchase date as long as you have the reciept.

I remember reading somewhere that warranties were from the date of manfaurer. I can't recall where I saw that, it actually might have been WD.

If you have the original warranty you should be ok, the warranty starts from the date of purchase.

If you have a WD drive, the warranty starts on the date printed on the drive.

wouldn't that be ridiculous? i mean, potentially, a drive could sit there for a few months before it was sold. so if you bought a drive, the warranty may only be 6 months if it is already 6 months old? doesnt make sense to me.

You might try shopping around. I was able to pick up an 80 gig WD SE drive at Circuit City last week that still has the old 3 year warranty on it for $49.95 after MIR's. But I agree their new policy makes it necessary to open the box and check the waranty before purchase. How popular is that going to be at Bestbuy? Then again, drives are so cheap now, maybe 1 year warranty is all you need. Just make sure you have good backups.

What was your manufacture date?

I pickedup one up from WD as well and my manufacture date is Oct10/2003
But Western Digital only gave me 1 year when i checked on there site....even though the policy changed on Oct 15...

From what I have seen and read... I think most of the 2mb cache western digital drives are covered under 1 year warranty while the 8mb cache drives (special edition) are covered with a 3 year warranty.

It is a 8MB cache JB WD...they changed there warranty on retail drives to 1 year.
