Wasn’t sure if I should post it here or in the TV forum.

Another sign that cars are meant to be disposable shortly after the warranty runs out. Interesting tech but the thoughts of a 55” screen flaking out and being replaced is going to be very expensive so the point that it will cost more than the value of the car at some point.

I watched the video reveal and that was like watching a college student stretch a 1 minute presentation into 10 minutes. Soooo long just to say "We have Nav, and an unknown quantity of Apps!" They also had to get those AI buzzwords in there.

Overall, it's the same trend we've been seeing after Tesla where it isn't enough to just have a screen or a couple screens in the car (like the Model S or Model X), rich people need more extravagance to set themselves apart from each other. Something like the EQS or S Class for that matter continues to be a car no one wants to own after warranty.

I wonder if it's actually one screen, or just one horrendous piece of glass that will explode into your face in a crash, with three to four screen elements stuck behind it.
Or, if it's plastic for safety - how long until it scratches in some horrendous fashion, because of interaction with some rings, fingernails, etc.

Finally - Hyper screen?? Really? Might as well bow to Elon Musk, and acknowledge that his stupid naming scheme is the future, by jumping on that bandwagon.

Yeah, in the presentation they covered that it's 3 separate screens covered by Corning Gorilla Glass. At first I was also wondering about scratching it, but now I'm honestly not so sure durability is a concern. In a high end car like that, no one's getting in with rivet-covered jacket except maybe Jen-Hsun. I don't think the dash is going to get beat up. Dusty yes, but not really worried about keys or other metal hitting it like my phone has to endure, and my Pixel 3 XL's screen has remained as immaculate as the day I got it 3 years ago. That's almost as long as you expect anyone to own one of these things!

Likewise, with modern adhesives, I don't think these glass displays will be exploding any worse than I'd be nervous about the windshield exploding. I am indeed curious how they handle the passenger airbag. It must need to come out from over the top, or underneath.

Like those panoramic roofs don't explode horribly, right?
But I guess chassis these days are so insanely stiff that it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Still, more glass in the cockpit isn't my first priority when a deer suddenly hurtles into the cockpit.

We had a screen like that in our 2019 CLS450, just smaller (like 2/3rds the width of the car). It was actually two smaller screens with one big piece of glass. Never scratched it and it worked flawlessly.

would love if all the displays/carputers were all industry standard sizes and interchangable with aftermarket replacements ..

sorta like how you used to replace head units

That makes sense, but it ain't gonna happen. I don't even think I would purchase a car like this if I could pay cash outright for it. I'm sure not going to get a new home mortgage. My notion of "vehicle status" is twisted and disjoint from what the auto-industry will assume -- especially for people with lots of cash.

I get a sense of "status" with pride and satisfaction from having a 26-year-old orphaned model SUV, updated to the 21st century with MY OWN dashboard custom additions.

I don't see why people need all that s*** from pillar to pillar. What do you NEED? Isn't dual Bluetooth receivers, backup and forward cameras, digital radio and Sirius with MP3 play enough?!? And how would you master all the LEDs and switches while keeping your eye on the road? Oh-- I can see. These are cars that drive themselves.

Drive themselves . . . . I'd rather have the driving experience of Ken Miles, knowing that the car is controlled by my own brain and muscle. I guess maybe other folks think that they can only play "Star-Trek" command-center during their driving sojourns with all that s*** on the dashboard. This seems parallel to "reality-TV syndrome". All the Star-Trek display is just SFX rubbish to entertain the audience.
