My Atlas eats catapults for breakfast and craps out jenners when it is done...

Atlas' either die far away from me using the PPC's or they get up close and I just stay behind them nearly the entire time, always gives them a big surprise when they see a catapult moving at 85kph

I use a similar laser hunchback to that. It uses all small pulse lasers, and I think a S245 engine? It pulls about 75kph. This was built before I knew how to use XLs properly so I'll go back and give it a redesign and possibly switch down to standard small lasers. Anyway, this thing just SHREDS assault mechs. All you have to do is stay behind them and hammer away at the rear torso. I think 7 blasts will kill just about anything out there. The key with the Hunchback, no matter what version you're playing, is you HAVE to increase it's speed. That thing is toast with the default engine unless you're going to just use a gauss rifle on the shoulder or something and play sniper hunch which is kinda dumb. I also use an AC20 + ML variant that I'm very successful with.

not liking the weapon hardpoint concept, should stick closer to the original rules.

yeah took me a bit to start using XL's, but partially because how expensive they are

Me neither, in some cases it doesn't make a lot of sense or feels too restrictive and eliminates too many creative builds. I'm not even familiar with original rules. I think it would be fine to designate some hard-points as Weapon S/M/L and Missile S/M/L or something to that effect, but saying for example the K2 pods can hold a PPC but not a AC5 makes no sense to me, but somehow the smaller body hardpoint could theoretically hold an AC20?

Actually they should just break it down more so there's some more flex than there is currently:

Energy S/L
Ballistic S/M/L
Energy/Ballistic S/M/L
Missile S/M/L
Omni S/M/L

No hardpoint system would mean every 75 ton mech is like another, with a different skin and hitzones. It would also render variants completely redundant if I'm assuming correctly.

the original I think was more like "you have stock or you do not play" sort of thing. The Clan rules / Omni-Mechs changed it up a lot but that sort of system will not work very well as everyone will sport similar weapons. Making different mechs of the same weight pointless.

but it still doesn't work, if I rip out a lrm20, why can I only add a single srm launcher in its place.

ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding! and that sums up my problem w/ the current system.

The weird part is they seem like they've accounted for this to some extent on some mechs. The HBK-4G has 3 ballistic slots in it's shoulder. If you use an AC20 that's all you can really fit due to slot limitations (well, + 2 MGs I suppose). If you used AC2s you can fit all three. The Catapult's pods are really the most glaring issue where this doesn't make sense, but you can find this problem on almost every mech.

It's still closed beta and when they next patch it (expected today) it will still be closed beta, so you should get into closed beta within 24 hours of purchasing (sounds like you'll get in within closer to 2).

A date for Open Beta has not been announced but is penciled in for "the end of Summer 2012".

On the $60 package, I know right now you have to pick one mech and can't change it, but any indication you can swap them around later?

Just seems limiting to lock into only one mech type that has the 25% bonus for grinding, would be great if you can change it later.

I get why they implemented the hardpoints. If not, every Atlas would have two AC20s and a slew of medium lasers. Everybody would just munch out their Mechs.

What I don't get is why the XL engine weights aren't correct. A 300 XL engine weighs 12 tons in the game but 9.5 tons in the original Battletech. XL engines are supposed to be half the weight of a standard engine.

Nope you can't change it, otherwise the Legendary package would not be worthwhile at all.

gyro and engine are lumped into one unit in MWO

But in the Battletech rules a 195 fusion engine weighs 8 tons plus 2 more for a gyro. An XL version weighs 4 tons plus 2 for the gyro.

In MWO, the same engine weighs 7 tons total (including the gyro if it's bundled in the weight) and the XL version weights 3 tons total.

Yeah I had the $30 just bit on the $60 a few minutes ago, because A. I got paid, and B. I wanted the founders atlas because I don't wanna have to go spending that kind of money on an atlas later.

and as I recall, each engine gave you 10 heat sinks regardless of size.

Same, I had just enough time to patch it before having to close it and get ready for fencing practice... Oh well later tonight I will try it out!
