Megahalem vs H100 for 3930k

I did a search, but this question was not answered anywhere. Specifically, I have a 3930k @ 4.5ghz. I have it on a megahalem. Quite often the temp gets over 80c. Would the H100 be able to drop that temp at least 5c, hopefully 10c ? any proof ? benchmarks ?

What, 97 views, and no facts from anybody ?? Or even opinions ? nobody with a 3930 and an H100 ?

Based on the charts from OC3D, the H100 does perform better than the Prolimatech Super Mega. If it beats the Super Mega, the Megahalems should be slightly worse and the H100 would be a definite improvement.

The H100 will lower temps, especially if you replace the stock fans.

SB-E is a hot chip at high clocks. If you have the money I'd go for a custom loop with that chip.

SB-E is toasty. FWIW I was running an NH-D14 on mine at first, which I believe is the best or darn close to best air cooler, and was hitting the high 70s and at times low 80s with a 4.6 OC under load.

I have a poor air cooling case though (800D) so I think that had some bearing on it. I've seen people report better temps than I saw with the same cooler/cpu combo.

At the expense of noise, H100 might be just a tad better, especially if you replace stock fans with something beefier (CFM). The best thermal paste might give you that 5c drop as well (not sure, what's best right now, though = last, it was indigo). Lapping the heatsink, could drop you another few to several degrees. All requires some effort.

I doubt, 80c is critical to worry about, though. I'd leave it as is.

One thing though, that H100 I think, has a bigger surface area. Might make the difference, that you want.

H100 for its flexibility. First with the default fans its pretty decent, but you can add two more or swap out all 4. In the end you can make it one of the coolest by going all CFM, or you can have an eye towards silence and be comfortable in knowing that with the water and the huge radiator, that it will still work pretty well.

Thanks Guys ! That 3930k chip surprised me. Its so big, my megahalem base is almost too small. I hope the H100 has a bigger base plate.

Based on all this, I think I will try it. No idea where to put the radiator though... (Antec 900 case)

Have you considered buying a corsair case? They're actually high quality cases and are designed with rads in mind.

H100 should establish better contact with your SB-E silicon

Just got my H100. First 3 boots, the CPU was at 91c (maxed). Then went into bios, and all of a sudden its at 32c ? So I reboot again. Then 52c, and 71c max @100%load. WTF ??

And my megahalem was @82c when I shut down, so 11c difference ? or was my paste a bad job ?

Anyway, pretty happy ATM.

It doesn't surprise me the H100 did better. 11C difference might be high, but perhaps your room was a bit colder.

How's it doing now?
