About to order a DS3 and an E6300 for my first new CPU since 2002. Little stumped on the ram however. I hear alot about voltage issues with this baord, as it defaults to 1.8v and wont post with some 2.0v ram. I do plan on overclocking eventually, but I dont really see the point immediatly, it should be plenty fast coming from an athlon xp 2100+. Budget is deffinatly a concern, and I have thought about getting a single 1gb stick now, and picking up another one when vista comes out. What ram have you had luck with on this board?

I got 2 x 1gb Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 4.4.4.12 and I can run this memory at just over 1000 on my DS3. It didn't know that it was also rated for 1066 at 5.5.5.12. It also booted right away and has never given me any problems. It is rated at 2.1v but mine runs fine on 1.8v.

Hope this helps.

memory is a really really confusing issue.. and for those of us coming from SDRAM (not even DDR) it's quite overwhelming at times..

I got around learning the chipsets and latest processors and even graphics to some extent.. but memory is still an issue.. specially with the new AM2 and 965 boards which are really choosy and would run one 2.1 v memory with no problem but wouldn't even post with another!!

For now I think i've narrowed my choices down to the DS3 board with 1.8v DDR2 533 memory with at least CL4 timings. I haven't heard any reports of 1.8v memory not posting with DS3 with latest bios so i'm sure it will work.. but someone can always come along and tell their horror story.. i wouldn't be surprised ..

Even though there have been alot of issues, the latest beta BIOS seems to have solved alot of them. Personally, I set up my system last night, with OCZ 6400 Plat, and it runs fine. If you get RAM rated higher than 1.8v, boot with one stick, QFlash your BIOS, change the VDIMM to your new voltage, reboot and put in your other stick. Seems to work for alot of peeps.

Value RAM will work fine now that the BIOS has been updated, but I was offering XMS2 because you said you were thinking of overclocking. I think their value line will overclock fine as long as you reduce the RAM divider so that it doesn't run above the rated 800mhz.

I have two 1 GB sticks of Patriot DDR2 800 memory that I purchased separately. One stick will cost you about $120 at ZZF and then you can add a second stick later like I did. The Patriot memory has worked great for me using the DS3 motherboard

try these bad boys instead:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=85025-5&ps=ho1
much cheaper.

the only difference is that they have lower rated timings, but in my experience these sticks perform much better than rated. at 800MHz they are stable at 4-4-4-10, and at 963MHz, they are stable at 5-4-5-10. I managed to get them to boot @ 900MHz 4-4-4-10, but it wasn't stable. my guess is that the max CAS 4 frequency is somewhere in the 850-875MHz range, but i'm not sure.
