Memory question

I have a few questions regarding memory.

I currently have OCZ 2x1024MB Dual Channel Value Series memory on an K8N NEO Platinum (non-SLI). I don't overclock the memory and I really don't plan to. One of my memory went dead, so I'm planning on replacing it. So, my questions are:

1) Do I need to get the 'same' memory, or can I get better memory and mix them? I really don't understand the timing stuff, but does that only matter if you plan to overclock?

2) Is it possible to set different timings for some of the memory and not others? I recall seeing manual timing setting in the BIOS setup.

3) Any recommendations for decent non-overclocking memory? I saw an article here recommending OCZ Performance 2GB (2x1GB)... Are OCZ memory reliable? My previous PC used Corsair memory, and I never had that memory go bad on me before...

if u want dual channel you need matching memory. personally, id go with new ram because ocz value ram isnt the best for a mobo like yours. ocz plat or gold would be a better choice, you dont need to overclock it, but the ability to do so is nice.

Now, if I were to purchase the platinum (2gb), can I use it along with the original value memory? The original memory is still under warranty, so I'm going to either get them to exchange with good memory, or see if I can exchange/upgrade the memory.

if i were you, id sell the stick of value ram and install the 2GB kit in your machine. yes, the performance of the computer will drop if another stick is slower than the new one you install. the speed of the ocz plat will drop to match the speed of the value stick.

just sell the stick of value ram. 2 GB is more than enough for any game out on the market now.

You can probably just RMA your old memory. You should have it back within 2 weeks. (You only need to send in the bad stick.)

Ok, I think I'll just sell my value and get new memory. What exactly is the difference between the OCZ Gold and Platinum? I'm seeing that the price is quite similar... I'm looking at:
