MFC42.dll for IE6 SP2

I've been having trouble with IE and think its the DLL, which version of mfc42.dll is IE supposed to use?

Mine's version 6.0.8665.0 for IE (according to event viewer) but most of my other ones including the one in C:\\windows\system32 is version 6.02.4131.0 like yours.
Don't know if updating it will screw things up...

Where is the one you're talking about?

I get 12 different ones in a search.

When IE crashed the event viewer report generated after the crash said that the faulting module was mfc42.dll version 6.0.8665.0. I don't know where it got that from.. Is IE supposed to use the system32 dll?

start > run > sfc /scannow

or

do an O/S repair install

I did SFC\scannow yesterday, didnt fix it. My XP CD doesn't like it if I try and use it, it comes up with an error that says the installed version is newer than the version on the CD (SP2 is installed)

"regsvr32 mfc42.dll" ?
The one that's in the system32 folder.
Can you actually find any 6.0.8665.0 versions of the file?

Yes, in:

windows\SxS
local settings folder
as well as a few program folders, download accelerater, 3Dmark, etc

You need to reboot to the cd.

When you do an SFC /scannow it will prompt you for either your XP CD or the latest service pack CD. The wording differences between the two are subtle. Be sure you are providing what it asks for.

It's likely the proper version is already sitting in your DLLCache folder if you want to take a look there.

Also most problems with IE are related to plug-ins and add ons. Select Tools | Internet Options, goto the programs tab and hit the Manage Add-Ons button. If you see something you don't dig, disable it.

there is a 6.2.xxxx.x dll in the dll cache, when I run sfc\scannow it asks for the ''windows xp home edition'' CD. What does it say when it wants the SP2 CD?
Also every time I run sfc\scannow it always has loads of dlls to replace, what would be putting them wrong in the first place?

Yuck. If you are getting prompted for files it could be due to your dllcache folder not being large enough. More likely you are simply finding mismatched files. Look in your event logs for Windows File Protection errors.

If being prompted for CDs is driving you nuts, create a slipstreamed i386 folder on your hard drive and point the SourcePath registry key to it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You may also need to set CDInstall to 0. Can't remember, sorry.
