Hey guys, I'm building a new computer for my father's beachhouse and I need to get a GFX card into it. However since ill be the only one really using the computer's video card the 10 times i probably visit the beachhouse I dont see it necessary to buy a 6800GT like i have in my home computer. I dont want to get strangled in FPS and such in most games now or in the future but I dont really feel like spending 400 dollars on a card. Any reccommendations in the 200-250 dollar range, I know the 9800 pro is out there, but I havne't heard much about the 6800 NU/ 6600 GT or the X700 or what not. If anyone has a reccommendation it would be appreciated

6800 would be the very best choice (is faster than 6600GT with AA/AF) and you may are lucky and can enable full 16pipes and 6vs and enjoy a 6800GT core.

no. there is only a 50/50 chance to do it. also the FT has DDR3 memory at 1ghz. the 6800's DDR1 memory will never reach those speeds. the 300dollar range is now home to the x800xl($299 msrp) it has 16pixel pipes instead of the 12 on the 6800nu and 6 instead of 5 vertex shaders. it is also clocked at 100mhz higher core and 300mhz higher memory.(in many tests the x800xl kills the 6800gt, it should hit the market right about now.)

unfortunately, there really arent any decent options at $250. the only $250 card is the 6800le which is horrible. it isnt any faster than the 6600gt($220) except at rediculouslyu high resolutions with all options on, at which point niether card runs acceptably anyway(it would be the difference between 25 and 35 average fps). the x700pro 256mb(~$240?) is also slower than the 6600gt. as for the 9800pro, it's slower than all the other cards mentioned.

X800XL is only PCI-E, also I said IF HE WAS LUCKY about unlock and I said 6800GT CORE which is true, so please read carefully before quoting!

Also X800XL doesn't kill 6800Gt in any test, and 6800 is known to be in sale for $280 in more than one place.

why dont you pick up surfing at your beach house when you go there instead of playing computer games which you can do anywhere.

The $300 range is NOT home to the X800XL- there are none available. When they are, you have no idea if they will sell for $299.. How many X800XT PEs sold for $499?

P.S. The last I saw, X800XL ETA was March.

1. The Inquirer is a bad source for real info

2. This vendor's ETA is probably a guess as well, but it's probably an early guess the way things are going for ATI of late.

Sorry dude, the waiting game is the way of it with new cards of late. The days of "the reviews are out, buy a card" seem to be gone.

Companies seem to want to make people wait to buy now.
