Hello,

Ive upgraded to windows XP twice before this, and both times ended up going back to ME, but now ive upgraded again and am determined to stick with it.

The reason i have always had to return to ME is because i dont have the mini freezes that i do in XP. What happens is that seemingly randomly the computer will freeze just for a single second and then everything will continue as normal. It's VERY annoying whilst watching videos, listening to music, or playing games. The 3 things i primarily use my computer for.

my system is as follows:

Abit KT7 motherboard
AMD Duron 700
128 o' ram
Soundblaster 5.1 Player
Pioneer 16 X DVD rom
Yamaha 8x4x24 cd rewriter
IBM 7200RPM 80 gig hdd (1 20 gig partition, 1 55 gig partition, both FAT32)
Hercules Kyro 2 4500 Tv out graphics card.
Winbond PCI Ethernet Adapter

The harddrive doesnt trash about when the mini freeezes happen (and they happen fairly reguarly, but having said that, i havent had one in the past hour, but before that id had lots in a row, and ive been doing the same thig during the whole time).

Could someone tell me what they think the problem may be and how i can rectify it?

Thank you

hello

thanks for the reply.

i did what you said and there is no new entry for the error after the mini freeze has happened. It just doesnt register as an error i suppose.
Any other thoughts?

thanks

Could it be from the 128MB of RAM? My WinXP system uses up about 220MB on a fresh boot, at least that's what Task Manager tells me. Your system could be shuffling stuff around in memory and virtual memory.

I would definately add more RAM. 128 MB is the recommended minimum but 256 or 512 is better. 256 MB is generally a good minimum amount for video playback as well. XP just gobbles up more resources than ME or a 9x based PC.

hello

Thanks for your replies!

Due to your advice i bought a 256 meg stick of ram to go with the 128 so the system will soon be running on 384meg. I hope this corrects the problem! Thanksalot once again.

Have a Task Manager in System Tray - <Ctrl-alt-Del>, Task Manager, Minimize it (must have minimize on use checked) See if you have activity on processor when the freeze happens.
I have no other ideas
