Missing hard drive!

System,
P4 2.4, Gigabyte Mobo, 533 FSB, Rambus RAM.
I have a 20.0 GB Master, and a 80.0 GB Slave on the IDE 1.
I have 3 boot partitions, two on the 20, one on the 80.

the environment that I use the most is the one on the 80 GB Slave drive, and after a while, (Usually on the order of days, the first hard drive disappears from the "My computer" listing.

Sometimes, It comes right back, as soon as I reboot, other times, the computer will not boot, and I need to either use a win 98 floppy, and Scandisk c: or use the Western Didital diagnostics disk to run a quick test, and then it works fine.

is my hard drive dying?

So just clarifying.... the 20gb disappears?

I would guess your Motherboards IDE controller or the drive itself is going. Other thought is the powersupply not providing enought juice...how many watts?

This type of problem is not really testable by direct methods (run program to check HD....), but you can try other things.

Put the Drive on another IDE channel....not really a good test, but if problem goes away it indicates the drive is good.
Some drive problems can be caused by other drives on the same channel......
