Can you combine souls from different callings?
IE: Can you have 2 souls from the Warrior calling and 1 soul from the Priest calling?

nope

think of role as choosing a class and souls as talents

You can change up your souls as much as you can afford it - however - you're stuck with the role and faction you choose.

However - souls within certain roles can perform similar functions as souls in other roles.

Rogue can tank
Mage can heal
Warrior can run around with a pet
cleric can tank

Ok, thanks!
Wow warriors with pets, I like that idea!

For those of you who played, is it possible with the current known souls to build a toon like a barbarian? Light armor / heavy damage?

EDIT: And quickly, how does loot work? Is it lthe same mechanic as the other MMOs out there? And is there specific bonuses between the races?

Armor is based on calling (that would be archtype.) So a warrior will get plate, a cleric will get chain, a rogue will get leather, and mages will get cloth. No matter which souls (classes) you take within that archtype.

Loot is no different than any other MMO. The group/raid can set loot options, the armors have colors to indicate strength (green, blue, purple). You get the need/greed/pass options when there is someone looting, etc. I did not notice anything between the races, except you get a racial ability, and what your toon looks like.

A barbarian type class is not really possible, because they'd have plate. However, you can get some souls that give you bonus to dodge, parry, defense in general. Other souls give you bonuses to damage if you use a two hander, etc. So you can mix it up a bit. But having a leather wearing barbarian is not possible.

Honestly, the warrior type seems the least innovative. All the souls feel somewhat close to one another except for the beastmaster.

About half dozen of my guildies were all high on this game a few weeks ago, playing the beta, now they're all back in WoW again and haven't said anything more about it.

I'd like to see at least one MMO kind of succeed that isn't called WoW, but I don't know if this is it...

Yes there is a Blademaster soul in the rogue archtype.
and they use Swords and axes and deal burst damage.

One neat thing about Rift is aoe looting. More than one corpse = only one click to loot them all.

When you help close rifts in the open world and fight invasions you get planar goods. This planar stuff can be traded in for purple/blue items at the proper vendor. So, you can get good gear other ways than just running dungeons or grinding warfronts; not that there is anything wrong with that.

Loot is about the same.

One thing that limits you in your making of a "jack of all trades" character is the fact that you have limited points to put into the tech tree. Look at this soul builder from zam.com to get an idea of what abilities you can mix and match.

Some information regarding the upcoming open beta. Seems like 20 man raids would about max the size and there will be a lot of 10 man raid content. I really like the idea of smaller raid sizes which would be roughly in line with WoW.

Don't get me wrong, there is something to be said about 72 man raids in Planes of Power in EQ1. Some of those fights, like Bertoxxulous Xegony, and were absolutely epic in nature and required some coordination. The problem is the burnout rate is high because at times it felt more like work and not play.

Well the problem with raids in general is that as you increase the number of people it shifts the challenge from skill at playing a class to skill at organization. That's fine in theory, since some people do get more enjoyment out of the organization/strategy side than they do using attacks on monsters. But it's a narrower group of people by necessity, which means that in a 72 man raid you have 6 people doing a lot and then 66 people mostly being bored pressing skills that matter almost not all on the margin.

I've played a lot of MMOs now, but my favorite raids have been in DDO where they are fairly small (10?) but there's a huge reliance on individual skill as you constantly have to physically dodge stuff or run across platforms, etc. It's not everybody's cup of tea but I never felt bored in DDO Raids like I did in pretty much every other game. Strangely, Turbine's other game LOTRO has some of the worst raids I've done so I guess it's partly subjective too.

I played Beta 6 and Preordered the very next day.. I was that impressed.
Its not so much what it does.. its how well and polished it does it.
I even went as far as to order a new 28inch LCD just for it.

I am really on the fence with this one. I do like it and I want to keep playing but not sure I'd be able to play enough to make it worth it.

Let's say Rift holds your interest for 7 months of part time playing. The cost would be $110 ($50 for box + $60 for 6 months subscription), or about $16 per month.

In order for it to be about the same value as a movie ($5/hr) you would need to play it for about 40 minutes per week.

In order for it to be about the same value as another game ($0.50/hr) you would need to play it for about 7 hours per week.

Josh, are you saying a Rift subscription "only" cost 10$/month?
I thought it was 15...at 10 I might give it a shot at launch...

If you buy the game before I *think* march 14 you can get the founders price as long as you keep the sub active, if you cancel it then you lose the price. Sign up for one month is the normal $14.99, 3 months is comes out to $11.99, and 6 month is $9.99

Non founders prices are, single month $14.99, 3 months is $12.99, 6 month $10.99

I might get the game anyways, it just look too good to pass.

I just realized something interesting during my "what old MMO's can I play because I'm bored of WoW and waiting on RIFT beta" - looking at EQ2 4 main classes [bah to SOE for not allowing me free access to my Assassin!] - fighter [warrior], scout [rogue], mage, priest [cleric] which are then divided into 6 sub-classes - look familiar?

Can't wait to try it out but I fear of being bored quickly...like most every games I played in the last 2-3 years...

Downloading the beta client for tomorrow's open beta debut!
I just can't wait to try the game.

I decided to try the beta first and see if Rift can keep me hooked for at least a couple of months, I really hope so.

I love the class system, the art style is really great, I'll see about the gameplay tomorrow.

I'm most likely play on a PvE-RP server, any recommendations?

I'm playing Vindictus. Just a so-so F2P game.

There is crafting. I've seen the trainers and I messed around with just some of the various gathering ones like mining and forging (herbs). I'm not sure what all of them are but there seems to be a good amount. I want to mess with it in this last beta to get a feel for it more so when it goes live i dont piss money away doing something stupid.

I'm glad the beta starts tomorrow been really wanting to play to just mess around and test things out

The crafting is decent in the game. It is basically like WoW's system, but with the trainers also selling the materials needed to make potions, leathers, armors. The mats are not hugely difficult to gather at the low end, but become increasingly difficult as you level up (sign of a well thought out system IMO).

I am looking to get to level 42 to try out all the new content and hoping to get some friends to really test the PvP since going in solo is not as fun as with a group of friends. I am going to test out the faction to see how well their starting zone is since I have focused only on the Defiant side. Hoping to also see more balanced souls that not one player can basically stay alive or do so much more damage/healing than another dps/healer.

The PvE is a mixture of soloing and grouping depending on if rifts are around and how you wish to run through the game. The quests are not overly time consuming, but there are a bunch of them if you wish to do them. Instances are difficult if not with a decent group (at least in previous betas), but there are opportunities to join the rift groups if you wish. There is really no need to grind away at anything due to the amount of quests, but if you wish, there are certain locations that are definitely worth just sitting and grinding away. This might change in retail since Trion has said a lot of the server testing and other things like respawn, difficulty, etc. will be lowered or stay the same.

Thanks for posting that...i'm now drolling all over my keyboard!!!!!

Now, I hate that feeling. The feeling when you're thinking about what class to roll and remembering all the choice you have. You want to be a Warrior...but Clerics look cool...but Mages look cool too...then you decide to be one of those...and you still have choices to make...

Love, hate...LOVE!

Think i'm gonna try a Cleric for this beta...shaman look awesome...
Or a Warrior?!!!?!? Beastmaster, love it!
...hmmm Mage...Necro/Warlock...death wish by the dozen!!!

Dammit...
