Started a ranger the other day on Arcanis (PVE). Only up to L13 so far. Going with a 51/15/0 R/NB/Sin build plan to start with and see how it goes. Its suppose to be the most popular ranger build currently. I keep hearing how the marksman (MM) is not good enough right now but that is heavily debated in the forums. So I decided to try it and get a feel for it and the game. So far I'm liking it. Hopefully the MM will get the boost they need to compete better.

Last night the rifts and invasions were going constant and heavy. I like the idea of Rifts and how they work. Its a nice change in a MMO. I'm curious though if the rifts open up as much as they do like last night because if so I can see where you could spend your whole time doing nothing but fighting rift invasions.

I still have a lot to learn yet. Its been years since I played any MMO and been out of the loop so its kinda like starting over again in a sense. A newb reborn. Heh, heh.

There is a world event going on at the moment which is why there are so many rifts and invasions popping up. There are three or four daily quests you can pick up from Sanctum (assuming you are a Guardian rather than a Defiant) for this world event.

If you are still levelling I really wouldn't worry too much about what build you take.

My rogue is getting boring. I wish there you got more significant abilities at certain levels... Like in Everquest you'd get spirit of wolf at level 10, and that was BIG. Then at level 20 you'd get teleportation (or whatever level) and that was also BIG.

I thought the same thing Throck. In guild chat it announced my char got level 30, so I followed it up with "Did I get something big for this level?". Games like Aion have almost conditioned me to get something very big at multiples of 10.

Common sense says you would allow people to use threat meters AND have the tank being vocal about what he is doing.

No, WoW is the most popular MMO because it caters to a broad range of players. You have the easy questing and then you have the raids for the raiders.

You seem to be responding to a different point than the one you responded to. I made a point about respawning mobs and you are talking about spoonfed quest directions.

Erm, what game - other than in an MMO - is threat even a game concept that is used or even mentioned?

Well people need to stop setting strawmen up first.
You are obviously correct on every point made and can not be swayed to alter your judgement on not being right - ever.

One needs to read further into the context rather than simply assuming the way one reads it is the way one sees as being evident to them and them alone.

I know but I just wanted a good all round ranger spec to start off with while I figure things out. I imagine I'll change things after a while but I just wanted to start out with something fairly solid to begin with.

Meridian (obviously) hosts those four quests for the Defiants. They're right next to the porticullum. I've collected about 250 shards so far from the various dailies. You also get shards from doing the rifts as well. Usually 2 or 3 depending on your contribution.

i love my ranger/bard/marksman, although i should call it bard/ranger/marksman as i have more points in bard now than ranger.

used from 1 -50. tried to do sab around 35 or so but didn't really care for it. survivability dropped to shit.

i do nice damage, can heal myself and my pet, kill pretty quickly and can really move from mob to mob with no downtime. taking on multiple mobs is pretty easy too. I only put 24 points in ranger to get the higher level pig.

Yeah, got me an 18 slot bag from a mob drop last night!

Any sites out there similar to wowwiki and such for looking up different aspect of the game? Would like to read more about the tradeskills and some other features.

I got an 18 slot bag drop from closing a rift yesterday too.

Gotta say, the Rift/Invasion mechanic is pretty cool. Last night, Silverwood was invaded by the Plane of Fire while I was on. It was very cool to see random strangers grouping up into a raid (the public group option obviously makes this a lot easier) to tackle closing the necessary 13 rifts and the subsequent "raid boss", all the while staving off the 8 or so invasion forces simultaneously trying to kill the Quicksilver College.

50 feels pretty boring. There's really nothing to do but grind rep and expert dungeons and rifts.

Hell, even a bunch of the 50 daily quests require several people and i can never find anyone else doing the same quests.

Did 2 expert dungeons and got me a nice epic bow called Corpse Maker. last night ran Charmer's Caldera and Abyssal Precipice with the guild, but just normal difficulty as we were helping some guildies do quests (which I also needed as well since i generally skipped all the dungeons while leveling).

I hate PVP in MMOs so thats out the window.

got a warrior alt going but that is hell to play. only like level 18 and i feel worse than a mage. i have no survivabilty and and trying to take on more than 1 mob at a time is death sentence.

I also have a lvl 16 or 17 mage that is fairly fun to play.

I've seen the invasions go nearly the distance a few times and a couple nights ago it was so bad we even got the defeated message.

I'm currently playing this, but as some others have echoed here I'm having a hard time adjusting to the 'Everybody can be everything to everyone' type of setup. I'm not sure it jives with me - but I just picked up a 60 day game card to give it its fair shake after my intro period is over.

Just seems weird to me. Like the 4 pillars are very very blurred in this game (Tank, Healer, Mage, DPS/Thief). Its almost like everybody is a hybrid. I mean, hell I have a cleric that can tank reasonably well. Or his other build I sit back and nuke/dot my enemies but he can't heal for squat. So what if they get close to me, I'm wearing chain mail. Better than leather or cloth right?

I'm just having a hard time getting in tune with the game philosophy. Graphically the game is beautiful. Interface wise its a lot like WoW.

i'm enjoying this aspect of it. i play a dps warrior and i'm not stuck always tanking because 2 other classes can tank. my warrior in wow always got stuck tanking because it's the only class that can, and there are various dps classes that can't do anything else. so to be "fair" the warrior tanks. my shaman always ended up healing, because what else can mages and locks do? not heal. this game gets rid of all those old boundaries and gives you more ability to play how you want. i'm somewhat surprised that all four can't do all 3 roles, but i wouldn't be surprised if that was added in the future. rogues and clerics can already heal dps and tank.

Yeah the thing is each calling heals, tanks and dps's differently, so sometimes a warrior tank is better, others a rogue tank. I'm sure the full potential of such a flexible system is still being discovered, that's part of what keeps me playing Rift.

It's an awesome way to do things. Example, I usually play a Necro but on the last boss in Foul Cascade expert, we were having problems with the last boss which is a spider queen. The AE coupled with the adds (we weren't a dps heavy group) was causing us to wipe. Instead of using a Necro I switched to chloro which does decent damage but also has great indirect heals and that put us over the hump. We did less damage and it took us longer to get the last boss down but we actually were in less danger of wiping.

Same thing when a person is playing a rogue, he can play a bard for buffs and some extra healing instead of going dps heavy. For large planar invasions and certain bosses, I switch to pyro and nuke from afar. It still requires a sound strategy a lot of times to beat bosses but DPS is not everything. Clerics can do some tanking if they so wish but they can also play a healer and not just the traditional healer. There are actually very different healing classes with different philosophies.

Contrast this with older MMO's and if you're a necromancer, that's that. If you're a cleric, you're a healer and that's it. If you're a rogue, you're a short range melee character.

I'm sort of having an issue with this after a few weeks of playing. I have a 39 mage (necro/lock/dom) that i've played that way as my first toon, and i did all the soul quests, so I tried one that was pryo/blah/blah and bought all the upgrades and had so many abilities I didn't quite realize how I should play it. For my 3rd alternative I did main chloro/blah/blah and this time I would pump in 2 points, see what I got, put them in my bars, rinse repeat and it made more sense. However, I still don't play those two other roles, ever, I stick with what I know.

Noted Joe. I recently switched from Pyro to Necro roles. It was definitely difficult to learn but I told myself to stick with it for the sole purpose of becoming a more well rounded character. My first day was rough learning the new role, it felt like I had 50 dots that were all the same and no way to heal, but by now I realize I have a million ways to heal and most of my spells do something unique. Although, I still forget I have FD.

But this brings up an interesting point. It doesn't matter that each class has 6 roles and can fill out various jobs in a party. What matters is whether you can actually do those roles effectively. And that means the role system equates to more learning on the players part, which can be enjoyable if you are the type of person that likes to be challenged and learn.

Next I need to learn a Chloromancer role so that I've got a healing role down.

Different roles for different situations.

I roll with my Warlock/Chloro/* (Archon, but 0 points in it) about 85% of the time. If I'm solo, I'm running it. If I'm in a group with no defined role, I'm running it. If I'm in PvP, There's a 50/50 shot I'm running it - it all depends on what WF I'm in and how our team is handling.

BUT... if there's a dungeon crawl looking for DPS, I'll switch to Pyro/Archon/Elementalist. If there's PvP happening in Black Garden or Codex, I'm going to start the match with this build.

IF there's a dungeon crawl that wants CC, I'm going to run my Domi/SC/* build. If I'm in PvP that I'm going to see a good amount of 1 on 1 I'm going to run this build. If we're in PvP where there's a lot of enemy casters (or in codex where I can stand back and AoE the shit out of people) I'm going to run this build.

Roles are very situational. I'm waiting for loads of plat to drop in my lap so I can buy my 4th role and make a necro build. The other nice thing is, if I get bored, I just switch roles.

So far I am impressed by what I have read about this game. I especially love the fact that the roles of Tank/Healer/DPS are not as defined as WOW. A friend of mine who has been playing WOW since day1 made the switch to this game and is very happy with this game. A few other friends are considering the jump as well. These are people that live and breath WOW. If this trend keeps up it should be very interesting times for Blizzard. I should see if this game will play on my laptop... I could play an hour or two a day. Wondering if this game is casual friendly like that?

I'd say its pretty casual friendly. I've been playing a few hours 3x's a week. I'm almost level 20.

I will say there is no sense of fear for me in this game. W/ EQ1 and WoW many years ago, I would actually worry about traveling to new areas and the penalty of dying.

I don't die much in this game. And I don't really fear to many areas. As I get higher I am slowly becoming more cautious, but never w/ the apprehension the other games delivered. Its more GI Joe in Rift.

EQ1 was the first and last MMO I ever feared dying in (Although, had I ever gotten far enough in EVE to have a really nice ship, I'm sure I would have been afraid then too). Not sure why you grouped WoW with it. The risk of death has long since been trivialized in nearly every MMO.

SunnyD what level are you that you are saving money for your 4th role? Just trying to get an idea for how far off I am. I'm currently level 41 and have the first 3 however the cost of the 4th has put me off.

I can remember a few times in WoW where going from one area to another required passing THROUGH a area where, at my level at the time, straying from the road meant instant death.

I'm level 44 as of last night. The 4th role will purely for fun though, so technically I'm not really "saving" for it. I'm more importantly saving for a mount right now that's faster than my turtle. I've had upwards of 28 plat last night, but training skill ranks across 3 roles at level 44 ate a good 6 plat. Plus I'm also putting effort into crafting too, so that eats a bit of money. On a good day just off junk loot, I make about 6-8 plat. I don't auction anything (needed for runebreaking).
