MMO Urge

I have the urge to play an MMO again but nothing currently out or upcoming interests me. I'd be interested in Camelot Unchained if it wasn't PVP.

I can't go back to a previously played MMO either. Once I get bored with one, its still boring even if I try to go back years later, plus there's never anyone else starting over so there's no one to play with.

That's not an MMO urge. It's a lack of MMO urge.

'I have an urge to find a new seafood restaurant, but I hate all seafood.'

I too have an urge for MMORPG (only Planetside 2 exists for MMOFPs imo and I'm playing that as much as I can bear), but I don't want to go back to EQ1 (dated graphics, not that it was too hard/etc).

What is the top 10 of current generation (shall we say, released within 4-5 years?) currently available, and what are the top 10 upcoming MMORPGs?

EQN is one if it is done right but that won't even be in beta for a long time let alone release...

ESO goes B2P like GW2 on 03/17.

Really depends on what you are looking to get out of an MMO before I could make a recommendation along with what you are willing to do from a payment standpoint.

What I have played recently:

WoW - currently playing. Still the best, most well polished fantasy MMO out there. Still the same $15 a month. Raiding is probably the most fun it has been sinse Ulduar and BC (my opinion) PvP outside of arena is dead. Lots of stuff to do when not raiding. The addition of garrisons is addictive with the follower missions.

Wildstar - Population has dwindled but seems to have stopped bleeding. Was by far the best combat that I have ever experienced in an MMO. Seems from the outside like a sci-fi setting but it fits the fantasy bill. Still has a monthly subscription. Challenging end game content, again the best I have seen in a while. Nothing to do outside of raid at end game. Far too many bugs early on crippled this game.

ESO - Played at release for two months. Horribly broken and generic. Definitely needed to go B2P. Will be trying it again when it does since I already spent the money. At release you basically could not play together, everything was phased content and would break if you were in a group. Have heard they fixed most of this. PvP still seems to be broken as some specs/skills are far far too op. Have heard it is a decent Elder Scrolls experience that would be worth it at a $20 price point.

Guild Wars 2 - Had a friend who really enjoyed this game for a time. I couldn't get into it. There is basically no end game. The experience seems to be the same if you are a lvl 1 or at lvl cap. Every so often there are some server wide events with large world bosses. They were fun but very repetitive. The short version of this game is that you just do zone after zone after zone of quests until you do them all. There are however a LOT of zones to do. Your character scales down to the level of the zone for most zones so you can do all of the low level zones. The few instances or dungeons there were when I played were really short and there basically seems to be mostly a lack of gear progression at lvl cap. The game wasn't for me.

Final Fantasy 14 - I really enjoyed this one. Still has a month fee. Great story and the classes are really fun. PvP is basically non existent. If you love gathering and crafting professions this will be right up your alley. Again, the story was fantastic. Graphics were great also. What I didn't like in the end was the combat speed. All combat happens server side instead of client side like most MMOs. Take WoW for an example, for the most part there is a 1.5 sec global cool down. In FF14 it is either 2.5 or 3 secs. It is just far too long. I have heard that they plan to address this with the xpac that is coming shortly. Good things about FF14 is that you get decent content patches several times a year that not only add to the raids and dungeons but also add to the main story so it is always progressing. I like this game a lot but I feel that it is something that I sub in and out of based on if they have added new content. Finish all the new stuff? Cancel your sub. They add new stuff? Resub.

Rift - Tried it for about a month. If WoW is a really good sandwich from a decent deli then Rift is that "meh" sandwich you bought at the grocery store. Generic all around. Decent for a try since it is free.

Secret World - Bought this on a steam sale. Really, really different. B2P also. If you like modern fantasy and kinda puzle/mystery stuff it is decent at $20 or less.

what is B2P? or do you mean F2P (Free to play)?

Tried all of those but wildstar, plus others.

I loved Rift but after awhile it got boring running the same dungeons over and over. Plus the guild I was in was awesome but seems hard to find one like that again.

I played WoW from release for about 7 or 8 months but then got bored running the same dungeons over and over.

Forget raiding, thats even worse.

FF14 wasn't too bad but there was no reason to group. you could do everything solo except the dungeons.

You buy the game, like Guild Wars 2, but there is no recurring monthly fee.
You can still pay monthly and you get the store money, in this case crowns for ESO

Star Trek Online added Romulan and Klingon story episodes for new characters leveling up, besides the recent high-level Delta quadrant story arc. Starting April 2 they'll add some additional content for new characters.

Like with Star Wars TOR you can play it like a single-player RPG if you want. You never need to do any of the grouped activities.

Yeah, but do you REALLY want anybody to start playing right now? The bugs and network issues are the worst I've seen them since probably Beta and S1. It wasn't until I introduced somebody to the game a couple months ago that I realized how many bugs I've gotten so used don't even think about them.

Don't get me wrong, I doubt I'm going to stop playing it anytime soon and the Sector Space revamp really looks fantastic. But trying to get a new player to suffer through the issues is a pretty tough sell.

Are you sure you really want to play an MMO? These responses do not seem like it. For the most part an MMO is 1. level through leveling content 2. Reach level cap 3. Grind for gear.

I assume you like the leveling aspect of a game but not the end game grind? Have you thought about playing a standard rpg like Dragon Age Inquisition or Pillars of Eternity?

What are you looking for from a game?

Star Wars Galaxies was the last good MMO
Wasn't City of Heroes after SWG? If so, to me that's the last good MMO, I had so much fun playing it, going into a hard mission with a full group, literally dozens of enemies plus lieutenants and bosses, everybody doing their job... just pure fun for over a year for me.

Star Wars ToR is great for at least one playthrough, and it actually has a story unlike other MMO. You can easily treat it as single player, too, if you wish.

I picked up the repopulation on steam:

I've only played a bit but it seems to be old school with tons of skills and complex crafting. I'll gladly accept someone to play with.

I like leveling up and playing with other people. i just don't like the constant grinding of the same content over and over.

I've played:
Ultima Online
Dark Age of Camelot
World of Warcraft
Rift
Final Fantasy XI
Final Fantasy IV
Tera
Age of Conan (beta)
Elder Scrolls Online (beta)
Star Wars Galaxies
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Everquest
Everquest 2
Secret World (beta)
Age of Wushu (beta)
Aion (beta)
Anarchy Online
Asheron's Call 2
Eve
Guild Wars
Guild Wars 2
Lineage 2 (beta)
Planetside
Silkroad
Lord of the Rings (beta)
Dungeons and Dragons Online (beta)
City of Heroes
Warhammer Online (beta)
Vanguard (beta)
a bunch of crappy free to play games not worth mentioning.

Only ones I really liked were DAOC, WoW, and Rift. Played those the most. Many of the others I only played for the free month or less.

you're like me. I enjoy MMO until end game becomes excessive, and then I get bored. MMO "success" is mostly about achieving something with the endgame. I tend to get to some point where I'm satisfied, then give up.

PvP has never been my thing in any flavor, and when team PvE content gets serious enough in guilds where you start to schedule time to accomplish dailies, and then that doesn't happen because no one can do it, I just say kitten it and stop logging in.

I highly suggest trying out Archeage. It's among the most feature-rich MMO's ever made - basically EVE in a fantasy setting.

It's not perfect, and the Korean fascination with punishing RNG mechanics make it painful and frustrating sometimes, but it's by far the best game out now unless you're looking for more World of Warcraft.

SWG was very unique. It's probably closest to Ultima Online. It had some horrid balance issues, but you could level just about anything. You could be a dancer if you wished, or singer.

I personally haven't enjoyed an MMO since the 1st expansion of WoW. WotLK was ok, but it all has gone down hill from there, as every MMO seems to push for the features that made WoW large, and has largely been what has turned me off of MMO's.

yeah...i managed to get in an awesome guild in Rift. Was all adults, all people who understood that we all had lives outside of the game and everyone got along for the most part. I started to get bored doing the endgame dungeons but enjoyed hanging out with the guildmates. we ended up running around together just doing achievements for awhile because slowly fewer and fewer people would log on to do anything.

I quit before some of the people I liked the most. wish i would have kept in touch with them to see if they went to other games. I haven't found that in any other game since.

Everyone says they hate the fantasy mmos but I think I like them the best. I also like the "old school" type of MMO, not this new fancy "active combat" crap. I have enough trouble remembering what skills to use and when to have to worry about constantly moving. Rift had some of this but it was only in the dungeon bosses, so it wasn't too bad.

Never liked PVP in MMOs either. Usually because I'm fighting against people who spend 12+ hours a day on the game and they're way better geared than me so it's no contest. Either that I get ganged up on.

When it's open world PVP, it's even worse. My 1 attempt at open world PVP in WoW sucked. Constantly getting ganked by a GROUP of people 30+ levels than me and then they'd sit there and wait for me to resurrect so they could do it all over again. Meanwhile I'm just trying to do a quest...
