what is this marriage theory ? I thought that if you had the on-off switch for the chip, you're safe... just don't log-in to XBL while the chip is on. I logged in a few times with the chip off and was fine... but only 2 days had passed before I unsubscribed from XBL so maybe my "test" wasn't so thorough.

supposedly they log your HD with your system first time you log into live, so they in effect "marry" those two together.

if you change the HD at any time after your first login, they will know it's a different hard drive and....BAN!

The marriage theory states that when you sign up for Xbox Live, Microsoft records your EEPROM (think of it like a serial number) and the serial number off your hard drive. If either number changes, you are banned. This means that as long as you keep your modchip turned off, and sign up for Live with your new upgraded harddrive, you're fine. But if you sign up for Live, and then ADD a harddrive, you will get banned because your HD serial number has changed.

Just don't sign up for Live until you add your new harddrive. Or, if you're already on Live, you can simply swap the drives somehow... I believe there is an article on xbox-scene.

i've bought my lil' brother an XBOX modchip, but been scared to do it myself for him, and i need some one in europer to do it for him (preferably someone in belgium if possible).
Modded XBOXs sound like so much fun

To Kai920,

Get the biggest harddrive that you can afford for it. If you don't fill it up with games, fill it up with movies, better yet, movies that you rip down to divx or something, so the file size is small.

I have heard of guys throwing in 400 gig drives in them, I have personally modded xbox's with 250 gig drives, and am have a 300 gig drive on the way.

Good luck with it and have fun.

I will put that theory to the test possibly this evening as I didn't sign up for Live until after I got my xbox modded. I bought the xbox, modded it, then signed up for live months later. Hopefully I am alright, it would suck having to grab a new box to play.

Yea...so the originals don't get scratched I bought games (like Halo 1, Max Payne) from when the XBox almost first debuted, play all the time (Halo 1) with not a single scratch on my Halo 1 disc. People get scratches on their games b/c they're dumbasses, or their friends who they lend the games to are dumbasses. Period.

Or they have a crappy "CaseIt" CD case. *holds up an unreadable MSVC++ Pro CD*

If you've already signed up for Live, your only two options are:

1) Swapping back the original hard drive everytime you want to go on Live. (kind of a PITA unless you rig an external HD swap setup) This is assuming you've never played Live on the bigger drive, or the original drive.

2) Keep the bigger drive in (assuming it hasn't been taken onto XBox Live) and flash your EEPROM.

I didn't have much success flashing my EEPROM and installing a totally new hard drive while using my banned Gamertag (the EEPROM was virgin, the HD was brand new) - a lot of people have said that same thing.

i think so as well.

Does leaving your modchip on and logging onto Xbox Live somehow change your EEPROM?

Having the Xbox stream mp3s/movies to the big screen downstrairs is amazing!
I've considered modding one of my Xboxs for a while now. But I have yet to come up with a decent reason to... Other than stealing games, of course.

What kind of movies are you talking about? Streaming from you PC to your big screen?

Your EEPROM is flashed on there and is not changeable without flashing it like your BIOS. Leaving your modchip on and signing onto Live guarantees you a ban. You're thinking too much
